Starnberg (district)
Starnberg () is a ''Landkreis'' (district) in the southern part of Bavaria, Germany. Neighboring districts are (from the north clockwise) Fürstenfeldbruck, Munich, Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, Weilheim-Schongau and Landsberg. Starnberg district and the Hochtaunuskreis regularly compete for the title of Germany's wealthiest district. Geography Main geographic feature of the district are the five lakes – the Starnberger See and Ammersee, as well as the smaller Weßlinger See, Wörthsee and Pilsensee. The lakes were formed by the glaciers of the last ice age. Hence the district is also called '' Fünf-Seen-Land'' (five lake county). History The district was created in 1902, when the ''Bezirksamt München II'' was dissolved, and the new ''Bezirksamt Starnberg'' and ''Bezirksamt Wolfratshausen'' were created. Starnberg is a German town in Bavaria, Germany, some southwest of Munich. It is at the north end of Lake Starnberg, in the heart of the " Five Lakes Country", and serves as capital of the district of Starnberg. Ice Age
An ice age is a long period of reduction in the temperature of Earth's surface and atmosphere, resulting in the presence or expansion of continental and polar ice sheets and alpine glaciers. Herrsching
Herrsching am Ammersee is a municipality in Upper Bavaria, Germany, on the east shore of the Ammersee, southwest of Munich. The population is around 8,000 in winter, increasing to 13,000 in summer. Situated at one terminus of the Munich S-Bahn line S8, the village is popular with travellers for its water-sports and as the starting point of trips to the Benedictine Andechs Abbey. Herrsching is also a stop for touring steamships of the Bavarian ''Seenschiffahrt'' or lake fleet. Gilching
Gilching is a municipality in the district of Starnberg, in Bavaria, Germany. It is situated 13 km north of Starnberg, and 22 km west of Munich (centre). The quarters Argelsried, Neugilching and Geisenbrunn belong to the municipality of Gilching. Gilching can be easily reached using the Munich area public transportation. One S-Bahn Railway Station is called "Neugilching" which is directly situated at the S8 line - formerly it was the S5 line - in the "Herrsching" direction. Gauting
Gauting is a municipality in the district of Starnberg, in Bavaria, Germany with a population of approximately 20,000. It is situated on the river Würm, southwest of Munich and is a part of the Munich metropolitan area. Feldafing
Feldafing () is a municipality in Starnberg district, Bavaria, Germany, and is located on the west shore of Lake Starnberg, southwest of Munich. History The history of Feldafing begins on the Roseninsel or Rose Island, the only island in Lake Starnberg. This area has been inhabited since as early as the Neolithic Period. Feldafing is also well known for the Hotel Kaiserin Elisabeth. Both places (Roseninsel and Kaiserin Elisabeth) were favorite vacation spots for the Austrian Empress Elisabeth of Bavaria ("Sisi"). Schongau, Bavaria
Schongau is a town in Bavaria, near the Alps. It is located along the Lech, between Landsberg am Lech and Füssen. It has about 12,000 inhabitants. Schongau has a well-preserved old wall around the center. Local history The origin of Schongau is the current Altenstadt (lit.: old town).
