Spoelberch
The House of Spoelberch is an old Belgian noble house, they are titled Viscount de Spoelberch. The family is legally recognised as being part of the nobility of the Belgian kingdom. History The genealogy of this family can be traced back to an act of 19 April 1535. This act mentions Willem Spoelberchs as the husband of Catherina van Hoegaerde, and as being the son of Wouter Spoelberchs. In 1828 Jean-Charles-Laurent-Joseph de Spoelberch de la Bawette inherited the ''Kasteel Drie Torens'' (Three Towers Castle) in Londerzeel. Another castle obtained by marriage is in Wespelaar. Today this noble house is one of the wealthiest families of the kingdom; their private fortune is an estimated 14 billion. André de Spoelberch, who died in 2017, was among the twenty wealthiest Belgians until his death. Eric Vicomte De Spoelberch
Éric Antoine Ghislain Joseph, Viscount de Spoelberch (15 February 1903 – 17 January 1939) was a Belgian pilot. He was born in Brussels and died in Nivelles. Family He was son of Guillaume de Spoelberch (1874–1947) and Colienne de Neufforge (1882–1929). He married Katharine Kelso Stewart 28 April 1932, in Haverford; Katherine's mother was Elsie Foster Cassatt (1875–1931), a sportswoman from a prominent Pennsylvania family, niece of artist Mary Cassatt and great-niece of president James Buchanan. The couple had two sons, Guillaume and Jacques de Spoelberch. Career As a lieutenant in the Aéronautique Militaire he was one of two Belgian pilots sent to Britain to evaluate the Hawker Hurricane and the Supermarine Spitfire. Ferdinand Van Spoelberch
Ferdinand van Spoelberch (1596–1675), Knight of the Order of Christ, Lord of Lovenjoul, was an officer in the Army of Flanders during the Eighty Years' War Life Van Spoelberch was born in Brussels on 13 August 1596, the son of Jan Baptist van Spoelberch and Maria Magdalena Garet.Herman Vander Linden, "Spoelberch, Ferdinand van"vol. 23(Brussels, 1924), 469-470. In April 1621 he accompanied Ferdinand van Boisschot on a diplomatic mission to France. On 12 January 1626 he married Anna de Grimaldi of Morazane (died 6 January 1634), daughter of Simon de Grimaldi, secretary to the Privy Council of the Habsburg Netherlands. Arboretum Wespelaar
Arboretum Wespelaar is an arboretum in Wespelaar, Belgium. History The grounds used to be private property of Elisabeth Willems, Viscountess de Spoelberch. their descendants kept the castle as private residence. The arboretum was started in 1984, as an extension of the dendrological collections of Philippe de Spoelberch, (great grandson of Elisabeth Willems) to the north of his estate of Herkenrode. In 2007, the arboretum and its collections were donated to the Foundation Arboretum Wespelaar which was set up to guarantee the future of the collections and arrange for their opening to the public in 2011. Some 2000 different taxa can be seen on the 20 hectare grounds. Collection The arboretum brings together trees and shrubs from around the world which can survive in the temperate Belgian climate. Alfred, Count de Baillet Latour (1901 – 28 September 1980) was a Belgian count. Order Of Christ (papacy)
The Supreme Order of Christ ( it, Ordine Supremo del Cristo) was the highest order of chivalry awarded by the pope. According to some scholars, it owes its origin to the same Order of Christ of the Knights Templar, from which came the Order of Christ that was awarded by the kings of Portugal and the emperors of Brazil. The Portuguese order had originally both a secular and religious component; by the 18th century, the religious component had died out. Dispute The papacy insisted that the right of the Portuguese monarchs to award the honour had been granted by a pope in the Papal Bull ''Ad ea ex quibus'' issued in Avignon on 14/15 March 1319. While the bull in itself does not explicitly grant to the pope the right to issue the order, successive popes since John XXII have done so. The House of Clermont-Tonnerre is a French noble family, members of which played some part in the history of France, especially in Dauphiné, from about 1100 to the French Revolution (1789–99). History Sibaud, lord of Clermont in Viennois, who first appears in 1080, was the founder of the family. His descendant, another Sibaud, commanded some troops which aided Pope Calixtus II in his struggle with the Antipope Gregory VIII.
