The South Korean space program began in earnest in the 1980s when research on space development began. Korea Aerospace Research Institute was established in October 1989, and the Korea AeroSpace Administration was established in May 2024. The medium-lift launch vehicle Nuri is specialized for low-Earth orbit satellites weighing 1.9 t or less, and the KSLV-III, currently under development and scheduled for its first launch in 2030, is specialized for inserting large satellites into geocentric orbit, Earth orbit and launching lunar or Mars probes. Based on the various data sent back by the lunar probe Danuri, which has been on a mission since 2022, a map of the moon were created. Nuri (rocket)
Nuri (; , meaning 'world' in native Korean language, Korean), also known as KSLV-II (Korean Space Launch Vehicle-II), is a Multistage rocket, three-stage launch vehicle, the second one developed by South Korea and the successor to Naro-1 (KSLV-1). It is developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI). All three stages use indigenously developed launch vehicle engines, making Nuri the first indigenously developed South Korean orbital launch vehicle (the Naro-1 launch vehicle used a Russian-made first stage). Koreasat 1
Koreasat 1 was a South Korean communications satellite launched by a Delta II rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, United States. Owned by KT Corporation. One of the boosters of the Delta II rocket failed to separate from the first stage of the spacecraft, placing it 5,000 km short of its planned GTO apogee. The satellite had to use up 7.5 years worth of its 12-year lifetime fuel supply to make up the deficiency, shortening Koreasat 1's expected life to about 4.5 years. In order to extend its lifetime, it gave up north–south station-keeping operating in "inclined mode." In the end, the satellite managed to function for 10 years. The King Sejong Station () is a research station for the Korea Antarctic Research Program that is named after King Sejong the Great of Joseon (1397–1450).
