Shire Of Hindmarsh
The Shire of Hindmarsh is a local government area in Victoria, Australia, located in the western part of the state. It covers an area of and in June 2018 had a population of 5,645, having fallen from 5,852 in June 2013. It includes the towns of Dimboola, Nhill, Rainbow and Jeparit. It was formed in 1995 from the amalgamation of the Shire of Lowan and Shire of Dimboola. The Shire is governed and administered by the Hindmarsh Shire Council; its seat of local government and administrative centre is located at the Council headquarters in Nhill, it also has service centres located in Dimboola, Rainbow and Jeparit. The Shire is named after the major geographical feature in the region, Lake Hindmarsh, (which in turn was named after John Hindmarsh) located in the east of the LGA. The Grampians is an economic rural region located in the western part of Victoria, Australia. The region lies to the northwest of the western suburbs of Greater Melbourne, to the state's western border with South Australia and includes the Grampians National Park and significant gold mining heritage assets. Kiata is a town in the Wimmera region of western Victoria, Australia. The town is north-west of the state capital of Melbourne, on the Western Highway. The population at the 2011 census was 251. Jeparit
Jeparit ( ) is a town on the Wimmera River in Western Victoria, Australia, north west of Melbourne. At the 2016 census Jeparit had a population of 342, down from 394 five years earlier. History The area around Jeparit is originally home to the Gromiluk Aboriginal peoples prior to European settlement. The name Jeparit is believed to be derived from a Gromiluk word meaning "home of small birds". European settlement began in the 1880s when German Lutheran immigrants began to settle and grow wheat. The town was surveyed in 1883 and gazetted in 1889, the post office opening on 31 August 1889 though known as Lake Hindmarsh until December 1889. Two earlier post offices called Lake Hindmarsh had existed in the area at various times since 1861 to serve a smaller population of graziers. Dimboola is a town in the Shire of Hindmarsh in the Wimmera region of western Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia, 334 kilometres north-west of Melbourne. History Situated on the Wimmera River, Dimboola was previously known as 'Nine Creeks'. Following a survey conducted in late 1862 by contractor Frederick Smith of Ararat, a plan for a township in the County of Dimboola was proposed. It was first recognised as being a township when mentioned in the April 1863 edition of the ''Government Gazette''. Before the arrival of white people into the district, the Aborigines called the area Watchegatcheca which had the meaning 'Wattle Tree and White Cockatoos'.
