Second Language Writing
Second language writing is the study of writing performed by non-native speakers/writers of a language as second language, a second or foreign language. In addition to disseminating research through the ''Journal of Second Language Writing'', scholars in the field regularly participate in three academic conferences, the Symposium on Second Language Writing, the TESOL convention, and the Conference on College Composition and Communication. In mathematics, a time series is a series of data points indexed (or listed or graphed) in time order. Most commonly, a time series is a sequence taken at successive equally spaced points in time. Thus it is a sequence of discrete-time data. Examples of time series are heights of ocean tides, counts of sunspots, and the daily closing value of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Wander Lowie
Wander Marius Lowie (born 14 October 1959) is a Dutch people, Dutch linguist. He is currently a professor of applied linguistics at the Department of Applied Linguistics at the University of Groningen, Netherlands. He is known for his work on Complex Dynamic Systems Theory. He is one of the members of the "Dutch School of Dynamic Systems" who proposed to apply time-series data to study second language development along with Kees de Bot, de Bot, Paul van Geert, van Geert, and Marjolijn Verspoor, Verspoor. Cornelis De Bot
Cornelis Kees de Bot (born 1951) is a Dutch linguist. He is currently the chair of applied linguistics at the University of Groningen, Netherlands, and at the University of Pannonia. He is known for his work on second language development and the use of dynamical systems theory to study second language development. Career De Bot obtained his PhD degree in general linguistics and applied linguistics in 1982 at the University of Nijmegen. His PhD research concerned the use of visualizations of intonation as a teaching aid. In May 1994 he became chair of Applied Linguistics and head of department at the University of Nijmegen. Marjolijn Verspoor (born 1952) is a Dutch linguist. She is a professor of English language and English as a second language at the University of Groningen, Netherlands. Second Language Development
Complex Dynamic Systems Theory in the field of linguistics is a perspective and approach to the study of second, third and additional language acquisition. The general term Complex Dynamic Systems Theory was recommended by Kees de Bot to refer to both Complexity theory and Dynamic systems theory. Terminology Numerous labels such as Chaos Theory, Complexity Theory, Chaos/Complexity Theory, Dynamic Systems Theory, Usage-based Theory have been used to the study of second language acquisition from a dynamic approach. However, Kees de Bot recommended the term Complex Dynamic Systems Theory in a chapter in Ortega and Han's edited book entitled 'Complexity Theory and Language Development in celebration of Diane Larsen-Freeman'.
