Schwarz-Weiß Essen is a German association football club based in Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia. The side has its origins in the gymnastics club ''Essener Turnerbund'' founded in 1881. A football department was formed in January 1900 and this became a separate entity within the club on 1 July 1974. History In 1933, the club joined the Gauliga Niederrhein, one of sixteen top flight divisions formed in the re-organization of German football under the Third Reich. They played at that level until being relegated in 1943, with their best results being a string of three consecutive second-place finishes between 1937 and 1940. SWE returned to tier I football in 1951 in the Oberliga West, and except for spending the 1958, 1959, and 1961 seasons in the second division, played in the top flight until the 1963 formation of the Bundesliga, Germany's first professional football league. Uhlenkrugstadion is a multi-use stadium in Essen, Germany. It is currently used mostly for football matches and serves as home ground for Schwarz-Weiß Essen. The stadium was built by its main tenant in 1922, having an initial capacity of 35,000 people and featuring a stand constructed out of iron, which was unusual at this time. In 1939, the structure was expanded to hold 45,000 people. Klaus Berge (born 4 October 1961) is a former German football player and current manager who last managed DSC Wanne-Eickel. As player he most notably played for FC Schalke 04 and 1. FC Saarbrücken. Manfred Rummel
Manfred Rummel (22 March 1938 – 27 July 2017) was a German professional football player and coach. Career Born in Essen, Rummel joined Schwarz-Weiß Essen in 1958 from FSV Kettwig. He was part of the Schwarz-Weiß Essen which won the 1959 German Cup. He spent five years with the club, scoring 51 goals in 87 appearances. He also played for SC Preußen Münster and 1. FC Kaiserslautern. He later played in the United States with the Pittsburgh Phantoms and the Kansas City Spurs. After retiring as a player, Rummel initially coached football to people with disabilities, before becoming manager of Schwarz-Weiß Essen in 1981, staying in that role until 1983. He held various other roles with the club, including being their managing director from 2006 to 2011. Gerd Zewe
Gerd Zewe (born 13 June 1950) is a German former football player and manager. Zewe was a youngster for SV Stennweiler and an amateur for Borussia Neunkirchen. Starting his career with his sole professional club, Fortuna Düsseldorf, in midfield, he was later used as sweeper and appeared in 440 Bundesliga matches (42 goals), which is still a Bundesliga record for the club. Zewe was part of the Düsseldorf team that reached the DFB-Pokal final on three consecutive occasions from 1978 to 1980, carrying the trophy home in 1979 and 1980. In 1979, he further won a European Cup Winners' Cup runner-up medal with Düsseldorf, getting beaten after extra-time by FC Barcelona at St. Jakob Stadium, Basel.
