Redspotted Catshark
The redspotted catshark (''Schroederichthys chilensis''), also known as the Chilean catshark, is a species of catshark commonly found in the coastal waters of the southeastern Pacific, from central Peru to southern Chile. They are typically found in the rocky sublittoral areas at the edge of the continental shelf, in waters down to 100 m in depth. They spend the spring, summer, and fall in rocky subtidal areas, but winter in deeper offshore waters due to the strong currents at that time of year. Description Redspotted catsharks range in length from 30 to 66 cm, although these sizes are taken from captured sharks, and it is believed that they may grow larger than this. Their bodies are elongate and sleek, typical of the catshark family. Their dorsal side is a dark reddish brown with dark saddle patterns on their side. Their ventral sides are a creamy white with reddish spots. Redspotted catsharks have two dorsal fins, with the first dorsal axil over the pelvic reg ...

Narrowmouthed Catshark
The narrowmouthed catshark (''Schroederichthys bivius'') is a catshark of the family Scyliorhinidae, found from central Chile around the Straits of Magellan, to Argentina between latitudes 23° S and 56° S, at depths down to about in the Atlantic Ocean and about in the Pacific. It can grow to a length of up to . The reproduction of this catshark is oviparous. Description As a juvenile, the narrowmouthed catshark is elongated and very slender, but as it grows its proportions change and it becomes rather more thickset. Its adult length can reach or more. The snout is rounded and slender and the front nasal flaps are narrow and lobed. This fish displays heterodont dentition; the mouth is long in both sexes, but is longer and narrower in males, with teeth that are twice the height of those of females. The general colour of the dorsal surface of both sexes is greyish-brown, with seven or eight dark brown saddles. Some large dark spots are scattered along the body but do not occu ...

Slender Catshark
The slender catshark (''Schroederichthys tenuis'') is a small species of catshark belonging to the family Scyliorhinidae. It is found on the upper continental slope off the coast of Suriname, French Guiana and northern Brazil, including the mouth of the Amazon River at depths between . Its it can grow up to a length of . Description The slender catshark is a small, elongated shark that grows to a length of about . The snout is relatively broad and rounded, the mouth is wide and the nostrils are concealed by lobed flaps. The second dorsal fin is larger than the first and the upper lobe of the tail fin is much larger than the lower lobe. The general colour of the dorsal (upper) surface is pale brown and there are seven or eight dark brown saddle-shaped patches with a scattering of dark brown spots between them. Distribution The slender catshark seems to be endemic to the upper continental slope of the coast of Brazil and Suriname including the Amazon estuary, between 4°N and ...

Narrowtail Catshark
The narrowtail catshark (''Schroederichthys maculatus'') is a catshark of the family Scyliorhinidae, found off the coasts of Honduras and Nicaragua, between latitudes 18° N and 10° N, at depths between . It can grow up to a length of . The reproduction of this catshark is oviparous. Description The narrowtail catshark is very elongated both as an adult and as a juvenile, growing to a length of about . The dorsal surface and flanks are light grey or tan, spotted with white. Juveniles have six to nine light brown saddle-shaped markings dorsally, but these fade in adulthood. The underparts are pale. Distribution The narrowtail catshark is endemic to the Caribbean Sea where it is found off the coasts of Honduras, Nicaragua and Colombia, and in the area of sea between Honduras and Jamaica. It occupies the edge of the continental shelf and the upper parts of the slope, its depth range being between about . It prefers to be above seabeds composed of fine calcareous materials. Ecol ...

Lizard Catshark
The lizard catshark (''Schroederichthys saurisqualus'') is a small shark species of the catshark family, Scyliorhinidae, found off the coast of southern Brazil on the upper continental shelf at depths of between . Description The lizard catshark is a small species growing to a maximum size of for males and for females. It is similar in appearance to the slender catshark (''Schroederichthys tenuis'') but can be distinguished from it by the fact that it has white spotting, a longer distance between the two dorsal fins and a longer distance between the pelvic and anal fins. The dermal denticals on its skin are rounded rather than pointed and it has about 122 vertebrae while the slender catshark has only about 110. Distribution and habitat The lizard catshark is native to the Atlantic coast of South America where it is present off Brazil. It is found on the upper part of the continental slope at depths of between among deepwater reefs where there are corals, tube sponges, gorg ...

Catshark
Catsharks are ground sharks of the family Scyliorhinidae. They are the largest family of sharks with around 160 species placed in 17 genera. Although they are generally known as catsharks, some species can also be called dogfish due to previous naming. However, a dogfish may generally be distinguished from a catshark as catsharks lay eggs while dogfish have live young. Like most bottom feeders, catsharks feed on benthic invertebrates and smaller fish. They are not harmful to humans. The family is paraphyletic, containing several distinct lineages that do not form a monophyletic group. Genera The family includes 17 genera and over 150 species, making it the largest family of sharks. * '' Akheilos'' White, Fahmi & Weigmann, 2019 * ''Apristurus'' Garman, 1913 * ''Asymbolus'' Whitley, 1939 * ''Atelomycterus'' Garman, 1913 * ''Aulohalaelurus'' Fowler, 1934 * ''Bythaelurus'' Compagno, 1988 * ''Cephaloscyllium'' T. Andrew Smith (zoologist)
Sir Andrew Smith (3 December 1797 – 11 August 1872) was a British surgeon, explorer, ethnologist and zoologist. He is considered the father of zoology in South Africa having described many species across a wide range of groups in his major work, ''Illustrations of the Zoology of South Africa''. Smith was born in Hawick, Roxburghshire. He qualified in medicine at the University of Edinburgh obtaining an M.D. degree in 1819, having joined the Army Medical Services in 1816. He was appointed the Albany district surgeon in 1822 and started the first free dispensary for indigent patients in South Africa. Shark Genera
Sharks are a group of elasmobranch fish characterized by a cartilaginous skeleton, five to seven gill slits on the sides of the head, and pectoral fins that are not fused to the head. Modern sharks are classified within the clade Selachimorpha (or Selachii) and are the sister group to the rays. However, the term "shark" has also been used to refer to all extinct members of Chondrichthyes with a shark-like morphology, such as hybodonts and xenacanths. The oldest modern sharks are known from the Early Jurassic. They range in size from the small dwarf lanternshark (''Etmopterus perryi''), a deep sea species that is only in length, to the whale shark (''Rhincodon typus''), the largest fish in the world, which reaches approximately in length. Sharks are found in all seas and are common to depths up to . They generally do not live in freshwater, although there are a few known exceptions, such as the bull shark and the river shark, which can be found in both seawater and freshwat ...
