Samuel Schieffelin
Samuel Bradhurst Schieffelin (February 24, 1811 – September 13, 1900), was an American businessman and author. Early life Schieffelin was born on February 24, 1811, in New York City. He was the son of Henry Hamilton Schieffelin (1783–1865), named in honor of Governor Henry Hamilton for whom his father Jacob, who was a Loyalist who served as secretary for during the American Revolutionary War, and Maria Theresa Bradhurst (1786–1872), who married in 1806. Among his siblings was brother Bradhurst Schieffelin (1824–1909), who entered politics and supported the People's Party. His paternal grandparents were Jacob Schieffelin (1757–1835) and Hannah Lawrence Schieffelin (1758–1838), she a descendant of Elizabeth Fones and Quaker religious freedom pioneer John Bowne. Bradhurst Schieffelin
Bradhurst Schieffelin (New York City, 21 September 1824 – Staten Island, 9 March 1909) was a United States druggist and activist. He was the son of Henry Hamilton Schieffelin and Maria Teresa (Bradhurst) Schieffelin, and was educated in New York City. He entered the wholesale drug manufacturing concern founded by his grandfather Jacob Schieffelin in 1794. In 1846, he became known as an advocate for equal suffrage for all males in New York. In 1860, he introduced petroleum commercially. During the American Civil War, he organized a committee of prominent citizens for consultation with and support of President Lincoln. In the financial troubles succeeding the war, he was active in charities: he fed and sheltered thousands of destitute people at his own expense. He organized the Bread and Shelter Society for sending destitute persons from cities to rural districts for their self-support. Eugene Schieffelin
Eugene Schieffelin (January 29, 1827 – August 15, 1906) was an American amateur ornithologist who belonged to the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society and the New York Zoological Society. In 1877, he became chairman of the American Acclimatization Society, and joined their efforts to introduce non-native species to North America for economic and cultural reasons. His 1890 release of European starlings in Central Park resulted in the first successful starling nesting in North America to be observed by naturalists. In the decades after his death, Schiefflin was recast as being solely responsible for the introduction of starlings, and in 1948, Edwin Way Teale claimed (without evidence) that he had been motivated by a desire to introduce all of Shakespeare's birds to North America. Ed Schieffelin
Edward Lawrence Schieffelin (1847–1897) was an Indian scout and prospector who discovered silver in the Arizona Territory, which led to the founding of Tombstone, Arizona. He partnered with his brother Al and mining engineer Richard Gird in a handshake deal that produced millions of dollars in wealth for all three men. During the course of Tombstone's mining history, about US $85,000,000 in silver was produced from its mines. Early life Ed Schieffelin was born in a coal-mining region of Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, the son of a prominent New York and Pennsylvania family, in 1847. His great-grandfather Jacob Schieffelin, Sr., born in 1757, joined the Loyalist army and served as Henry Hamilton's secretary during the Revolutionary War. Schieffelin was captured in 1779 and held prisoner in Williamsburg, Virginia. He escaped to Canada, where in 1780 he was appointed a lieutenant in the Queen's Rangers by Henry Clinton.
