Saint John's Seminary (Massachusetts)
Saint John's Seminary, located in the Brighton neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, is a Catholic major seminary sponsored by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston. Founded in 1884, the seminary has 114 seminarians and approximately 60 lay students, mostly from dioceses in New England. The current rector is Fr. Stephen E. Salocks. History In 1864, wealthy Boston merchant James Stanworth acquired a farm on a hill in Brighton known as the Hildreth estate. Stanworth suffered losses in the Panic of 1873 and his heirs found he owed substantial debts. Archbishop John Joseph Williams purchased the Hildreth estate and construction of the Boston Ecclesiastical Seminary began in 1881 and was completed in 1884. In 1883, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts granted a Charter to the Seminary to grant degrees in philosophy and divinity. The Archbishop entrusted the seminary to his former teachers, the Sulpicians. The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University are two closely related private, Catholic higher education institutions in Minnesota. The College of Saint Benedict is a women's college located in St. Joseph, while Saint John's University is a men's college in Collegeville. Students at the institutions, both of which are Benedictine, have a shared curriculum and access to the resources of both campuses. St. John Vianney Seminary (SJV) is a Catholic college seminary located on the campus of the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. The seminary's mission is "to provide basic training today for tomorrow's Catholic priests." Seminarians undergo a four-year program of spiritual conferences and individual spiritual direction in order to help them grow strong in their Catholic faith and for vocational discernment. Saint John Vianney Theological Seminary is a Catholic seminary in Denver, Colorado. It is located at 1300 South Steele Street in the Cory-Merrill neighborhood of Denver, on the campus of the St. John Paul II Center for the New Evangelization. Saint John Vianney College Seminary is a Roman Catholic seminary in Westchester, Florida, with a Miami post office address. It was founded in 1959 by Archbishop Coleman Carroll, the first bishop of the Archdiocese of Miami. In 2014, there were 97 students enrolled. The goal of the institution is to form men for the diocesan priesthood by focusing on the four dimensions of formation: human, spiritual, pastoral, and academic.
