Vladimir Arlazarov
Vladimir L’vovich Arlazarov ( Russian Арлазаров Владимир Львович) is a Russian computer scientist born in Moscow. Research work In 1965 at Alexander Kronrod’s laboratory at the Moscow Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics (ITEP), Vladimir Arlazarov co-developed the ITEP Chess Program, together with Georgy Adelson-Velsky, Anatoly Uskov and Alexander Zhivotovsky, advised by Russian chess master Alexander Bitman and three-time world champion Mikhail Botvinnik. At the end of 1966 a four game match began between the Kotok-McCarthy-Program, running on an IBM 7090 computer, and the ITEP Chess Program on a Soviet M-20 computer. The match played over nine months was won 3-1 by the ITEP program, despite playing on slower hardware. KOI8-R
KOI8-R (RFC 1489) is an 8-bit character encoding, derived from the KOI-8 encoding by the programmer Andrei Chernov in 1993 and designed to cover Russian, which uses a Cyrillic alphabet. KOI8-R was based on Russian Morse code, which was created from a phonetic version of Latin Morse code. As a result, Russian Cyrillic letters are in pseudo-Roman order rather than the normal Cyrillic alphabetical order. Although this may seem unnatural, if the 8th bit is stripped, the text is partially readable in ASCII and may convert to syntactically correct KOI-7. For example, "Русский Текст" in KOI8-R becomes ''rUSSKIJ tEKST'' ("Russian Text"). KOI8 stands for ''Kod Obmena Informatsiey, 8 bit'' (russian: Код Обмена Информацией, 8 бит) which means "Code for Information Exchange, 8 bit". Andrei Chernov
Andrei Aleksandrovich Chernov (russian: Андре́й Алекса́ндрович Чернов, translit=Andréj Aleksándrovič Černóv; 27 August 1966 – 16 August 2017), also known as Andrew Chernov and Ache, was a Soviet and Russian programmer who was one of the founders of the Russian Internet and the creator of the character encoding KOI8-R. He is also known for his contributions to the esoteric counterculture of the Russian 1990s, especially the popularization of Thelema and the name of Aleister Crowley in post-Soviet Russia. Setun
Setun (russian: Сетунь) was a computer developed in 1958 at Moscow State University. It was built under the leadership of Sergei Sobolev and Nikolay Brusentsov. It was the most modern ternary computer, using the balanced ternary numeral system and three-valued ternary logic instead of the two-valued binary logic prevalent in other computers. Overview The computer was built to fulfill the needs of Moscow State University. It was manufactured at the Kazan Mathematical plant. Fifty computers were built from 1959 until 1965, when production was halted. The characteristic operating memory consisted of 81 words of memory, each word composed of 18 trits (ternary digits) with additional 1944 words on magnetic drum (total of about 7 KB). Between 1965 and 1970, a regular binary computer was used at Moscow State University to replace it. A ternary computer, also called trinary computer, is one that uses ternary logic (i.e., base 3) instead of the more common binary system (i.e., base 2) in its calculations. This means it uses trits (instead of bits, as most computers do). Nikolay Brusentsov
Nikolay Petrovich Brusentsov (russian: Никола́й Петро́вич Брусенцо́в; 7 February 1925 in Kamenskoe, Ukrainian SSR – 4 December 2014) was a computer scientist, most famous for having built a (balanced) ternary computer, Setun, together with Sergei Sobolev in 1958. In 1970 he designed Setun 70, implementing principles which were later proposed for the RISC architecture independently.
