Rugby union in Nigeria is a minor but growing sport. They are currently ranked 70th by World Rugby. Governing body The governing body is the Nigerian Rugby Football Federation. History Rugby union was first introduced into Nigeria by the British empire. For a number of years the game was dominated by white settlers and expatriates, and to an extent, a number of expatriate oil workers still play there. A number of Nigerian people have emigrated to the UK, and there is a London Nigerian Rugby Club. Rugby union, commonly known simply as rugby, is a close-contact team sport that originated at Rugby School in the first half of the 19th century. One of the two codes of rugby football, it is based on running with the ball in hand. Marcus Watson (born September 16, 1989, in Houston, Texas) is an American soccer player currently playing for Los Angeles Misioneros in the USL Premier Development League. Career Youth and amateur Instead of attending college and playing college soccer, Watson decided to pursue a career as a professional soccer player straight out of high school; he travelled to England, and was offered a place on the academy of famed English club Leicester City. As a member of the U18 Academy team, Watson was rostered in two reserve games while with the Foxes. Nigeria National Rugby Union Team
The Nigeria national rugby union team represent Nigeria in men's international rugby union. Nigeria have thus far not qualified for a Rugby World Cup, but have competed in qualifying tournaments. Nigeria played their first international against Zimbabwe on 1 August 1987, losing by 111-12 in Nairobi. Their greatest success has been in the 2013 Africa Cup, where they beat Mauritius 63-3 in group 1C. Nigeria tried to qualify for the first time for the 2007 Rugby World Cup, but lost to Senegal (6-48) and Cameroon (8-18), and were eliminated. They also missed the presence at the 2011 Rugby World Cup, after losing to Cameroon (6-26), in the pre-qualifier. Maro Itoje
Oghenemaro Miles "Maro" Itoje (born 28 October 1994) is an English professional rugby union player, who plays as a lock or as a blindside flanker for Gallagher Premiership club Saracens and the England national team. He signed his first professional contract with Saracens in 2012, and made his first appearance the following year. He received his first-call up to the England team in 2016 ahead of the annual Six Nations Championship, and became a firm favourite to both Saracens and England fans. Wakefield RFC
Wakefield RFC was an English rugby union club, founded in 1901 and folded in 2004 as a result of poor finances, with a trading loss of £105,000 for the season and unsecured creditors' loans of approximately £640,000. The club's final season was in 2003–04 when they were relegated after losing to Coventry RFC in their final match. The club was based at College Grove in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. Bright Ojamohare Sodje (born 21 April 1966) is a retired dual-code rugby player, who played for rugby league clubs; the Wakefield Trinity (Wildcats), Hull Kingston Rovers, and the Sheffield Eagles in England as well as rugby union for Wakefield RFC. Sodje's brothers, Sam, Efe, Akpo, Steve, and his nephew, Onome, have all played professional football in England. Andrew Harriman
Andrew Tuoyo Harriman (born 13 July 1964) is a Nigerian born rugby union player who played as a wing for Harlequins and was capped for England as a full international. He was prominent as an exponent of the sevens game, including leading England to victory at the 1993 Rugby World Cup Sevens. Early life Harriman was born in Lagos, Nigeria. He was educated at Radley College and Magdalene College at Cambridge University where he was a blue in both rugby and athletics in 1985. Rugby career Harriman was known as one of the quickest and most exciting runners of his generation. He scored a vital and brilliantly taken try when Harlequins won the Pilkington Cup against Northampton in May 1991. Chris Oti (born 16 June 1965 in London) is an English former rugby union player. He was a rugby winger of prodigious pace who represented England thirteen times between 1988 and 1991. He was a member of the England squad that appeared in the 1991 Rugby World Cup during which he made two appearances. Chris Oti is married with 3 children. International career Chris Oti had a brief career as a top flight rugby union player but nevertheless made a significant contribution to the history of the sport. Temitope "Topsy" Ojo (born 28 July 1985) is an English rugby union player for London Irish , and has represented England at International level. He is London Irish's all-time leading try scorer, with 73 tries in all competitions. Career London Irish Ojo was born in Tottenham, London. His father, Akin Ojo, a thoracic surgeon, and his mother Bola Ojo (née Ibidapo-Obe) are from south-west Nigeria, where Temitope is a common Yoruba name. Victor Eriakpo Ubogu (born 8 September 1964) is a former Bath and England rugby union player. Arriving in the UK from Lagos, Nigeria in 1977, he attended West Buckland School in Devon he received the school's top award, the Fortescue Medal. While at school he played for England Under 18s. He went on to the University of Birmingham to study Chemical engineering. While at university he played for Moseley. He went on to St Anne's College, Oxford where he was selected to play with University of Oxford RFC and achieved his Blue. After leaving Oxford he joined Bath Rugby.
