''Rosa Mundi'' is a 2001 album by folk singer June Tabor. It is a concept album that represents Tabor's exploration of the rose as a symbol of love, of beauty and hope. As a folk singer, Tabor’s primary sources are traditional but it is her secondary source choices, ranging from Tchaikovsky to a Great War ballad via Robbie Burns and a version of a German traditional piano song "Es Ist ein Rose Ersprungen", that separate this album from being a generalist folk music album. Tabor's singing is understated, reflecting her desire for the songs to be centre stage. The album was reviewed favourably by a number of British music critics. ''RootsWorld''s Jim Foley described ''Rosa Mundi'' in positive terms. In ''The Guardian'' Robin Denselow praised ''Rosa Mundi'', and commented that Tabor's work demonstrated a commitment to the art of song with each song sung with Tabor's distinctive vocals. June Tabor
June Tabor (born 31 December 1947 in Warwick, England) is an English folk singer known for her solo work and her earlier collaborations with Maddy Prior and with Oysterband. Early life June Tabor was born and grew up in Warwick, England. As a young woman of 18, she was inspired to sing by hearing Anne Briggs' EP '' The Hazards of Love'' in 1965. "I went and locked myself in the bathroom for a fortnight and drove my mother mad. I learned the songs on that EP note for note, twiddle for twiddle. That's how I started singing. If I hadn't heard her I'd have probably done something entirely different." Rosa Mundi (group)
Rosa Mundi was the name of a very short-lived electronic music supergroup which consisted of Rose McDowall, John Balance and possibly Peter Christopherson. The group is credited for "The Snow Man" which appeared on the compilations ''The Final Solstice'' and ''The Final Solstice II'' and the split 7-inch vinyl ''Grief''. It is also credited on the song "Christmas Is Now Drawing Near" from the Coil single '' Winter Solstice: North'', later released on ''Moons Milk (In Four Phases)''. Since both songs, "The Snow Man" and "Christmas Is Now Drawing Near", were originally released in 1999, it can be said that this is the only year the group functioned. However, the song "Rosa Decidua" from the 1998 Coil EP Autumn Equinox: Amethyst Deceivers, while not credited to Rosa Mundi, has exactly the same line-up. ''Rosa gallica'', the Gallic rose, French rose, or rose of Provins, is a species of flowering plant in the rose family, native to southern and central Europe eastwards to Turkey and the Caucasus. ''Rosa gallica'' was one of the first species of rose to be cultivated in central Europe. It is a parent of several important cultivars. Description ''Rosa gallica'' is a deciduous shrub forming large patches. The slender, straight prickles are various in size and frequency in this species. The leaves are pinnately-compound, with three to seven bluish-green leaflets. The flowers are clustered one to four together, on glandular pedicels. Each flower has five or more petals, sometimes producing double corollas. The flowers are fragrant and deep pink. The hips are globose to ovoid, 10–13 mm diameter, and orange to brownish.
