Multihull
A multihull is a boat or ship with more than one hull, whereas a vessel with a single hull is a monohull. The most common multihulls are catamarans (with two hulls), and trimarans (with three hulls). There are other types, with four or more hulls, but such examples are very rare and tend to be specialised for particular functions. Sailing multihulls Counter-intuitively, it is unhelpful to think of the design progression to be "1-2-3", namely monohull - catamaran - trimaran; rather, it is "1-3-2". A sailing trimaran is, in effect, a modified monohull with lightweight outrigger hulls (or "amas") for stability instead of a heavy deep keel; so it follows that a sailing trimaran will be lighter and faster than a sailing monohull. A sailing trimaran will have a centre hull that may comprise up to 90% of total hull volume, and 95% of total deadweight. The Vancouver 36 is an American sailboat that was designed by Robert B. Harris as a bluewater ocean cruiser and first built in 1977.Sherwood, Richard M.: ''A Field Guide to Sailboats of North America, Second Edition'', pages 290-291. Houghton Mifflin Company, 1994. This boat design is often confused with the later and unrelated Tony Taylore-designed Vancouver 36 sailboat, which was built in the United Kingdom by Northshore Yachts, starting in 1989. The Harris design is usually appended with his name to differentiate it from the other design. Production The design was built by Durbeck's Inc in Sarasota, Florida, United States, starting in 1977, until they went out of business in 1983. Hidden Harbor Boatworks, also in Sarasota, then produced the design until they too went out of business a few years later, in the late 1980s, ending production. A total of 13 boats were built. Naramatac
''Naramatac'' was a catamaran sailboat designed by Robert B. Harris in 1948 and launched in 1950. Its innovative use of asymmetric hulls later became a hallmark of the Hobie Cat. Concept Efficacy Harris' design was not entirely successful, however. At speed the flat bottoms pounded, and it showed poor performance in low wind which he ascribed to deep hulls (particularly aft), lack of stability to carry additional sail, too much wetted surface, and too heavy construction.
