Rider Broncs Women's Basketball
The Rider Broncs women's basketball team is the basketball team that represents Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. The school's team competes in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. History Rider's first season in women's basketball was in 1925, though they had periods where they did not play basketball, such as 1926–27, 1930–32, 1958–59, 1962–63, and 1966–1974. They played in the East Coast Conference (ECC) from 1982 to 1992 and the Northeast Conference from 1992 to 1997 before joining the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) in 1997. They won their first regular season conference championship in 2018-19. Postseason appearances The Broncs have made two postseason appearances, doing so in 2017 and 2019 in the WNIT. Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference
The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC, ) is a collegiate athletic conference affiliated with NCAA Division I. Of its current 11 full members, 10 are located in three states of the northeastern United States: Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York. The other member is in Maryland. Members are all relatively small private institutions, a majority Catholic or formerly Catholic, with the only exceptions being two secular institutions: Rider University and Quinnipiac University. The MAAC currently sponsors 25 sports and has 17 associate member institutions. The 2017 Women's National Invitation Tournament was an annual single-elimination tournament of 64 NCAA Division I teams that were not selected to participate in the 2017 Women's NCAA tournament. The tournament committee announced the 64-team field on March 13, following the selection of the NCAA Tournament field. The tournament began on March 15 and ended on April 1, with the championship game televised on the CBS Sports Network. In the championship game, the Michigan Wolverines defeated the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 89–79, in triple overtime. The 2019 Women's National Invitation Tournament was a single-elimination tournament of 64 NCAA Division I teams that were not selected to participate in the 2019 Women's NCAA tournament. The tournament committee announced the 64-team field on March 18, following the selection of the NCAA Tournament field. The tournament began on March 20, 2019, and concluded on April 6, 2019, with the championship game televised on the CBS Sports Network. In the championship game, Arizona defeated Northwestern 56–42 to win the tournament. Stella Johnson (basketball)
Stella Johnson (born July 11, 1998) is an American professional basketball player who most recently played for the Washington Mystics of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). She played college basketball for the Rider Broncs. Career Despite playing on a top-tier Amateur Athletic Union team, Johnson was unranked and not recruited by major college teams. She was recruited by and enrolled in Rider University of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), whose women's basketball team had never made the NCAA tournament. In her four seasons with the Rider Broncs, she was named MAAC Player of the Year two times and led the team to its first postseason appearance in the 2017 Women's National Invitation Tournament. At the end of the 2019–20 season, she was the only active Division I player to record 2,000 points, 700 rebounds, 400 assists and 300 steals. 2019 WNBA Draft
The 2019 WNBA draft was the league's draft for the 2019 WNBA season. On March 19, the league announced the draft would be held on April 10 at Nike New York headquarters. The first round was televised on ESPN2, and the second and third rounds were televised on ESPNU. On August 28, 2018, the league held the draft lottery between the four non-playoff teams – Indiana, New York, Las Vegas, and Chicago. The Aces won the top pick for the third year in a row.
