Richard Gordon Heath Holmes, OBE, FRSL, FBA (born 5 November 1945) is a British author and academic best known for his biographical studies of major figures of British and French Romanticism. Biography Richard Gordon Heath Holmes was born on 5 November 1945 in London. He was educated at Downside School, Somerset, and Churchill College, Cambridge. He is a fellow of The Royal Society of Literature and a Fellow of the British Academy. He was professor of Biographical Studies at the University of East Anglia from 2001 to 2007 and has honorary doctorates from the University of East London, University of Kingston, and the Tavistock Institute. In the 1992 Birthday Honours, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). He lives in London and Norfolk with his wife, British novelist Rose Tremain. Richard Holmes (organist)
Richard Arnold "Groove" Holmes (May 2, 1931 – June 29, 1991) was an American jazz organist who performed in the hard bop and soul jazz genre. He is best known for his 1965 recording of "Misty". Career Holmes's first album, on Pacific Jazz with guest Ben Webster, was recorded in March 1961. He recorded many albums for Pacific Jazz, Prestige, Groove Merchant, and Muse, many of them with Houston Person. He died of a heart attack after battling prostate cancer, having performed his last concerts in a wheelchair. One of his last gigs was at the 1991 Chicago Blues Festival with his longtime friend, singer Jimmy Witherspoon. Richard Holmes (born 1 January 1963) is a British film producer. Career Holmes began his career in a comedy double-act, The Gruber Brothers, with Stefan Schwartz. He produced Schwartz's debut feature film, the award-winning ''Soft Top Hard Shoulder'' (1993), winner of a BAFTA Scotland for Best Film and Best Actor. He went on to co-write and produce ''Shooting Fish'' (1997) starring Kate Beckinsale, Stuart Townsend and Dan Futterman. He then produced the multi-award-winning ''Waking Ned'' (1998) written and directed by Kirk Jones (director), Kirk Jones. He was nominated, alongside his producing partner Glynis Murray, for a Producers Guild of America Award for the film. From 1999 - 2002 he was Managing Director of Civilian Content Plc. Richard "Rick" Arthur Holmes, Jr. (April 21, 1936 – August 21, 2015), was an American jazz radio disc jockey and Grammy-nominated spoken word recording artist. Holmes was born in Knoxville, Tennessee and after serving in the United States Navy, moved to Los Angeles. He was employed at the US Postal Service while attending the Don Martin School of Broadcasting, and after graduation he began his professional radio career at KBCA Radio 105.1 FM, in Los Angeles, where he worked from 1967 until 1970. Holmes' show "Rick's Affair" featured " Poinciana", in an arrangement by Ahmad Jamal, as its theme song. The show became "Rick's Family Affair" in 1975. Holmes was later hired by KJLH 103.2 FM, owned by Stevie Wonder, where he hosted evening jazz show "Holmes in your Home." William Richard Holmes (born 25 November 1952) is a former English cricketer. Holmes was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm medium pace. He was born at Wednesbury, Staffordshire. While studying at the University of Cambridge, Holmes made a single appearance in List A cricket for the university cricket team in the 1974 Benson & Hedges Cup against Sussex at the County Cricket Ground, Hove. In a match which Sussex won by 186 runs, Holmes bowled eleven wicketless overs and was dismissed for just one run by Mike Buss. This was his only appearance for Cambridge University, with him not featuring in any first-class fixtures for the team. Richard Holmes (born September 24, 1952) is a former all-star running back in the Canadian Football League. A Fighting Scot from Edinboro State College, Holmes joined the Toronto Argonauts in 1977, but played only 3 games and rushed for 151 yards with them. He finished the year with the Ottawa Rough Riders, rushing for another 865 yards (giving him 1016 for the season) and scoring 11 touchdowns. He was an eastern all-star. Richard Holmes (earlier spelled Richard Homes) (b. 1704) was a founding settler of Norwalk, Connecticut. Holmes was born about 1633, in York, England, the son of Francis Holmes and his first wife, whose name is unknown. Francis married a woman named Ann, and came to America with her prior to 1634. They originally settled in Watertown, Massachusetts. In 1636, Francis and Ann moved from Watertown to Wethersfield, Connecticut Colony. In 1657, Francis and Ann with their four children moved from Wethersfield to Stamford, Connecticut. He was one of the earliest settlers in Stamford. Richard Holmes bought his Norwalk lot on 12 October 1657, from Alexander Bryan of Milford. He was the settlement's blacksmith. Sir Richard Rivington Holmes, KCVO (16 November 1835 – 22 March 1911) was a British archivist and courtier. Biography Holmes was Royal Librarian at Windsor Castle, 1870-1905. He was appointed by Queen Victoria and was reappointed by King Edward VII in 1901. He was a lieutenant-colonel of the 1st Volunteer Battalion, Berkshire Regiment. He was appointed Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in January 1905. Edward Richard Holmes, CBE, TD, JP, VR (29 March 1946 – 30 April 2011), known as Richard Holmes, was a British military historian. He was co-director of Cranfield University's Security and Resilience Group from 1989 to 2009 and became Professor of Military and Security Studies at Cranfield in 1995. Early life and education Holmes was educated at Forest School, Walthamstow, Emmanuel College, Cambridge, Northern Illinois University, and the University of Reading, where he was awarded a PhD in 1975. Military career In 1964, he enlisted in the Territorial Army, the volunteer reserve of the British Army.
