Rensselaer, Indiana
Rensselaer is a city located along the Iroquois River in Marion Township, Jasper County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census, up from 5,294 at the 2000 census. The city is the county seat of Jasper County. Saint Joseph's College is located just south of the city limits. Geography Rensselaer is located southwest of the center of Jasper County at (40.938051, -87.151341). It is bordered to the south by the unincorporated community of Collegeville, home to Saint Joseph's College. The Iroquois River, a tributary of the Kankakee River and hence part of the Illinois River watershed, flows from east to west through the south part of the city. U.S. Route 231 and Indiana State Road 114 intersect in the downtown area. The former Monon Railroad The Monon Railroad , also known as the Chicago, Indianapolis, and Louisville Railway from 1897 to 1971, was an American railroad that operated almost entirely within the state of Indiana. The Monon was merged into the Louisville and Nashville Ra ... station was demolished in 1981. A new accessible concrete platform was constructed with funds from the 2009 stimulus bill. The platform, which cost around $500,000, was dedicated on April 20, 2011. The 1979-built shelter was later demolished and replaced with a one-story brick building, which opened on August 21, 2013. Rensselaer is a village in Ralls County, Missouri, United States. The population was 253 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Hannibal Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Rensselaer was laid out in 1876. The community took its name from nearby Rensselaer Academy. A post office called Rensselaer was established in 1871, and remained in operation until 1953. Rensselaer County is a county in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2020 census, the population was 161,130. Its county seat is Troy. The county is named in honor of the family of Kiliaen van Rensselaer, the original Dutch owner of the land in the area. Rensselaer County is part of the Albany-Schenectady-Troy, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The area that is now Rensselaer County was inhabited by the Algonquian-speaking Mohican Indian tribe at the time of European encounter. Rensselaer is a city in Rensselaer County, New York, United States, and is located on the east side of the Hudson River, directly opposite of Albany. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 9,210. Rensselaer is on the western border of Rensselaer County. Rensselaer Falls is a village located in St. Lawrence County, New York. As of the 2010 census, the village had a total population of 332. The current name came from mill owner Henry Van Rensselaer. The Village of Rensselaer Falls is in the western part of the Town of Canton and is due west of the Village of Canton. History A six-foot drop in the river attracted early settlers to the available water power. The community was first called "Tateville" and later "Canton Falls." Rensselaerville () is a town in Albany County, New York, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2020 census. The town is named after Stephen Van Rensselaer. History Rensselaerville was once part of the Manor of Rensselaerswyck; as such, the people who farmed the land were technically leaseholders of the patroon under a feudal system, first as part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland, then under the English colony, and then U.S. state, of New York. Some of the earliest settlement in Rensselaerville was along the five Native American paths that crossed the town in the early 18th century. The Manor of Rensselaerswyck, Manor Rensselaerswyck, Van Rensselaer Manor, or just simply Rensselaerswyck ( nl, Rensselaerswijck ), was the name of a colonial estate—specifically, a Dutch patroonship and later an English manor—owned by the van Rensselaer family that was located in the area that would later become the Capital District of New York in the United States. The estate was originally deeded by the Dutch West India Company in 1630 to Kiliaen van Rensselaer, a Dutch merchant and one of the company's original directors. Rensselaerswyck extended for miles on each side of the Hudson River. Rensselaer Morse Lewis (November 9, 1820 – December 16, 1888) was an American merchant from Fond du Lac, Wisconsin who served a single one-year term in 1873 as a Liberal Reform Party member of the Wisconsin State Assembly from Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin. Early life Lewis was born November 9, 1820 in Morrisville, New York, the son of Conway Lewis and Adelia (née Curtis) Lewis. He received an academic education and became a grain merchant and wholesaler. Career In 1853, he came to Wisconsin, settling in Fond du Lac. He was listed as a produce dealer in 1867. From 1867 to 1869 he served as postmaster of that city. He declared bankruptcy in 1868 and his home burned down in 1872. Rensselaer Russell Nelson (May 12, 1826 – October 15, 1904) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota. He was the son of United States Supreme Court Justice Samuel Nelson. Education and career Born on May 12, 1826, in Cooperstown, New York, Nelson attended Hartwick Seminary, then graduated from Yale University in 1846 and read law with James R. Whiting of New York City, New York in 1849. At Yale he was a member of Skull and Bones. He entered private practice in Buffalo, New York from 1849 to 1850. Rensselaer Westerlo (May 6, 1776April 18, 1851) was a United States representative from New York and a member of the Livingston family. Early life Rensselaer Westerlo was born on May 6, 1776 at the Van Rensselaer Manor House in Albany in the Province of New York. He was the son of Catherine Livingston (1745–1810) and her second husband Eilardus Westerlo (1738–1790). Catherine Livingston was the daughter of Philip Livingston (1716–1778), and widow of Stephen Van Rensselaer II, and the mother of Stephen Van Rensselaer. Westerlo's sister, Catherine Westerlo, married John Woodworth. Westerlo graduated from Columbia College in New York City in 1795. He studied law, was admitted to the bar, and practiced.
