The number of Ramsar sites in Tunisia is 42 sites in 2022 corresponding in total to 844,685 hectares of land coverage. Tunisia started to take part in the Ramsar Convention in 1981 and has many Wetlands of significant size such as the Chott el Jerid and Ichkeul Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage Center. Zaghouan Governorate
Zaghouan Governorate ( ar, ولاية زغوان ' ) is one of the twenty-four governorates (provinces) of Tunisia and is in north-eastern Tunisia. It covers an area of and its population was 176,945 at the 2014 census. The capital is the town of Zaghouan. Geography The area is roughly circular and lies above the low coastal plains; it has a summit of close to its centrally-located capital on the west side of the founding city. The summit sits on one of two north-east to south-west escarpments forming part of the dorsal Atlas Mountains commencing here close to the east coast and Tunisia's capital city, Tunis. Selja Gorges
Selja Gorges (from the traditionnal transcription fr. ''Gorges de Selja'') or the Thelja Gorges as more recently transcribed from Arabic (arabic حلق الثالجة) are located in southern Tunisia in Gafsa Governorate. The gorges link the Gafsa Valley with the Redeyef plateau. The area contains abundant phosphate deposits. Ramsar Wetland The Gorges are a several kilometers long natural valley with deep ravines through which the Thelja Wadi runs a very sinuous course towards the Chott El Gharsa. The surroundings are mountainous and arid and form a part of the Djebels of the Saharan Atlas (with an altitude between 210m and 450m). An area of 675 ha is protected as Ramsar wetland, where the wadi's waters are present all year around (albeit with a very small flowrate). Bizerte Governorate
Bizerte Governorate ( ar, ولاية بنزرت ' ) is the northernmost of the 24 governorates of Tunisia. It is in northern Tunisia, approximately rectangular and having a long north coast. It covers an area of 3,750 km² including two large lakes, one coastal hence saline and one freshwater being the World Heritage Site, Ichkeul lake. Its population was 568,219 as at the 2014 census. The capital is Bizerte which stands principally on inlet between Bizerte lake and the Mediterranean. Tunis Governorate ( ' ) is the smallest and most populated of the twenty-four governorates (provinces) of Tunisia. Lake Of Tunis
The Lake of Tunis ( ''Buḥayra Tūnis''; ) is a natural lagoon located between the Tunisian capital city of Tunis and the Gulf of Tunis (Mediterranean Sea). The lake covers a total of 37 square kilometres, in contrast to its size its depth is very shallow. It was once the natural harbour of Tunis. History The Tunis-Carthage connection was very important to the Romans, as it meant control over the fertile hinterland. The Romans therefore built a dam through the lake. The dam is used today as an expressway for automobiles and railway connecting Tunis to the harbour, La Goulette, and the coastal cities of Carthage, Sidi Bou Said, and La Marsa.
