Quartier Latin International (QLI), or Quartier Latin, is a soukous band from the Democratic Republic of the Congo established in 1986. Location The band was formed in 1986 in Kinshasa). It plays in DR Congo and other African countries and often tours in Europe and North America. Overview The band was founded by its leader, composer, guitarist, vocalist, dancer and entertainer, Koffi Olomide. The band performs both in Lingala and French. Since inception, the band has seen many members come and go, some more than once. Many former band members still maintain good relations with the band. A show commemorating the band's 30th anniversary took place on 16 November 2016. The chief organizer is Fally Ipupa, who left the band in 2006. Ferré Gola
Ferré Gola, also Ferre Gola, whose full name is Hervé Gola Bataringe, is a DR Congolese recording artist. He at one time was a member of legendary Congolese bands, Wenge Musica Maison Mère and Quartier Latin International. Background He was born on 3 March 1976, in Kinshasa, the largest city and capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. From an early age, he was passionate about becoming a professional musician. Ferré Gola began his career in a band in Bandalungwa commune called "Rumba des Jeunes" before making his historic entry in "Wenge Musica" in 1995. At the split of this group, Ferré Gola joined Werrason in Wenge Musica Maison Mère for 7 years, before creating with Bill Clinton Kalonji and JDT Mulopwe "Les Marquis de Maison mère". Fally Ipupa
Fally Ipupa N'simba (born December 14, 1977), known by his stage name Fally Ipupa, is a Congolese singer-songwriter, dancer, philanthropist, guitarist and producer. From 1999 until 2006, he was a member of Quartier Latin International, the music band formed in 1986 by Koffi Olomidé. His first solo album was ''Droit Chemin'' released in 2006, which went on to sell over 100,000 units, and his second album ''Arsenal de Belles Melodies'' was released in 2009. In 2007, Fally Ipupa won the Kora Awards for Best Artist or Group from Central Africa. In 2010, Fally Ipupa won the MTV Africa Music Awards 2010 for Best Video for "Sexy Dance" and Best Francophone Artist. He won the urban awards for Best African Artist. Koffi Olomide
Antoine Christophe Agbepa Mumba (13 July 1956), known professionally as Koffi Olomidé, is a Congolese Soukus singer, dancer, producer, and composer. He has had several gold records in his career. He is the founder of the Quartier Latin International orchestra with many notable artists, including Fally Ipupa and Ferré Gola. Background Olomide was born on 13 July 1956 in Kisangani, DRC. His mother named him Koffi because he was born on Friday. He grew up in a middle-class family, without any musical background. During his youth, Olomide improvised by singing popular songs with his own lyrics and altered rhythms until a neighbor taught him how to play the guitar. African Rumba
Congolese rumba is a popular genre of dance music that originated in the Congo basin during the 1940s, deriving from Cuban son. The style gained popularity throughout Africa during the 1960s and 1970s. It is known as Lingala in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania after the Lingala language of the lyrics in the majority of the songs. In Zambia and Zimbabwe, where Congolese music is also influential, it is still usually referred to as rumba. It is also an individual dance.
