Pterorhinus
''Pterorhinus'' is a genus of passerine birds in the laughingthrush family Leiothrichidae. Taxonomy The genus was erected by the English zoologist Robert Swinhoe in 1868 with the plain laughingthrush (''Pterorhinus davidi'') as the type species. The name of the genus combines the Ancient Greek ''pteron'' meaning "feather" with ''rhinos'' meaning "nostrils". These species were at one time placed in ''Garrulax'' but following the publication of a molecular phylogenetic study in 2018, ''Garrulax'' was split up and some of the species were moved to the resurrected genus ''Pterorhinus''. At the same time, the four species previously placed in ''Babax'' were moved here. Species The genus contains 23 species: * Rufous-necked laughingthrush, ''Pterorhinus ruficollis'' * Chestnut-backed laughingthrush, ''Pterorhinus nuchalis'' * Black-throated laughingthrush, ''Pterorhinus chinensis'' * Chestnut-capped laughingthrush, ''Pterorhinus mitratus'' * Chestnut-hooded laughingthrush, ''Pterorh ...

Chestnut-hooded Laughingthrush
The chestnut-hooded laughingthrush (''Pterorhinus treacheri'') is a species of bird in the laughingthrush family Leiothrichidae endemic to Borneo. Described by the British ornithologist Richard Bowdler Sharpe as a distinct species in 1879, it was subsequently considered a subspecies of the chestnut-capped laughingthrush until 2007, when it was again raised to species status by the ornithologists Nigel Collar and Craig Robson. It is long, with a chestnut brown head and chin, with grey feathering on the top of the head. The and the side of the neck are slaty-grey, with a long white wing patch. The throat, breast, and upper belly are dull yellowish-brown, with purer grey and a reddish-brown , lower belly, and thighs. It has a yellow half eye-ring behind and below the eye, while the tail has a blackish tip. Both sexes look similar, while juveniles are duller than adults. The species inhabits montane and hill forest, forest edge, disturbed vegetation, and cultivated areas in mount ...

Plain Laughingthrush
The plain laughingthrush or Père David's laughingthrush (''Pterorhinus davidi'') is a species of bird in the family Leiothrichidae. It is endemic to central and northeastern China. Its natural habitat is temperate forests. Taxonomy The plain laughingthrush was described by the English zoologist Robert Swinhoe in 1868 from a specimen collected in Beijing, China. He coined the binomial name ''Pterorhinus davidi''. The specific epithet honours the French missionary Armand David (1826-1900) who worked in China between 1858 and 1874. This species was normally placed in the genus ''Garrulax'' but following the publication of a comprehensive molecular phylogenetic study in 2018, the genus ''Pterorhinus'' was resurrected and plain laughingthrush was returned to its original genus. It was formerly treated as conspecific with the Chinese babax (''Pterorhinus lanceolatus'') It is found above in the Lushai Hills in the northeast Indian state of Mizoram and across the border into the Chin Hills in western Myanmar. Taxonomy The Mount Victoria babax was described by the English ornithologist Frank Finn in 1902 from a specimen collected in Kanpetlet near Mount Victoria (Nat Ma Taung) in western Myanmar. He coined the binomial name ''Babax woodi''. The specific epithet ''woodi'' honours the co-author of the article, Lieutenant Henry Wood (1872-1940), who was a British Army surveyor in India. The Mount Victoria babax was considered as a subspecies of the Chinese babax until 2005 when the American ornithologists Pamela Rasmussen and John Anderton argued that the Mount Victoria babax should be treated as a separate species based on the differences in the ...

Blue-crowned Laughingthrush
The blue-crowned laughingthrush or Courtois's laughingbird (''Pterorhinus courtoisi'') is a species of bird in the family Leiothrichidae. It is now found only in Jiangxi, China. Until recently, this critically endangered species was generally treated as a subspecies of the yellow-throated laughingthrush, but that species has a pale grey (not bluish) crown. The blue-crowned laughingthrush was formerly placed in the genus ''Garrulax'' but following the publication of a comprehensive molecular phylogenetic study in 2018, it was moved to the resurrected genus ''Pterorhinus''. The specific name was chosen to honour the French missionary to China Frédéric Courtois (1860-1928). The nominate subspecies was only rediscovered in 2000, in Wuyuan County, Jiangxi, but remains very rare with a total wild population of approximately 200 individuals. The subspecies ''G. courtoisi simaoensis'' has not been encountered in the wild since the type specimens were collected in Simao, Yunnan in 1 ...
