Psittacara
''Psittacara'' is a genus of parakeets in the tribe Arini. Species of the genus are found in Central and South America, the Caribbean and one species reaching the southern United States. Until 2013, all the species were placed in the genus ''Aratinga''. Many of the ''Psittacara'' species are kept in aviculture or as companion parrots, where they are commonly known as conures. Taxonomy The members of this genus were formerly placed in the genus ''Aratinga''. Molecular phylogenetic studies had found that ''Aratinga'' was non-monophyletic so in order to create monophylectic genera James Van Remsen Jr. and collaborators proposed in 2013 that ''Aratinga'' should be split and a group of species moved to the resurrected genus ''Psittacara''. The genus had been introduced in 1825 by the Irish zoologist Nicholas Aylward Vigors with the white-eyed parakeet as the type species. Species The genus contains 13 species including one which is now extinct: * Green parakeet (''Psittacara holoc ...

Arini (tribe)
The Arini tribe of the neotropical parrots is a monophyletic clade of macaws and parakeets (commonly called conures in aviculture) characterized by colorful plumage and long, tapering tails. They occur throughout Mexico, Central America, and South America, and formerly the Caribbean and North America. One genus and several species are extinct; another genus is extinct in the wild. Two species are known only through subfossil remains. About a dozen hypothetical extinct species (see Extinct Caribbean macaws) have been described, native to the Caribbean area. Among the Arini are some of the rarest birds in the world, such as Spix's macaw, which is extinct in the wild – fewer than 100 specimens survive in captivity. It also contains the largest flighted parrot in the world, the hyacinth macaw. Some species, such as the blue-and-yellow macaw and sun conure are popular pet parrots. Molecular studies have dated the divergence of the Arini tribe from the ancestral neotropic ...

Green Parakeet
The green parakeet (''Psittacara holochlorus'') is a medium-sized parrot occurring in North and Central America, from the southernmost tip of Texas south to northern Nicaragua. Description The green parakeet is 32 cm in length, and is mostly green in color. It also has a yellow beak. Diet It feeds on seeds, various fruits, and corn. It can sometimes be considered a crop pest. Habitat Wild birds primarily use scrub and swamp forests, woodlands, and forest clearings. The US population takes advantage of palm groves in cities. Taxonomy This species was formerly placed in the genus'' Aratinga'' as ''A. holochlora'', and divided into various subspecies (''A. h. holochlora, A. h. brevipes, A. h. brewsteri, A. h. strenua,'' and ''A. h. rubritorquis''). Later, it was split into three species as the green conure (''A. holochlora''), Pacific conure (''A. strenua''), and Socorro conure (''A. brevipes''). Today it is recognised as single species with a highly threatened subspecie ...

White-eyed Parakeet
The white-eyed parakeet or white-eyed conure (''Psittacara leucophthalmus'') is a small green Neotropical parrot native to South America. Taxonomy First described by German zoologist Philipp Ludwig Statius Müller in 1776, its specific epithet is derived from the Ancient Greek ''leukos'' "white" and ''ophthalmos'' "eye". Dickinson (2003) recognised three subspecies: ''Aratinga leucophthalma nicefori'', ''A. l. callogenys'', and ''A. l. leucophthalma''. Description The white-eyed parakeet measures in length and in wingspan, with a body mass of .''CRC Handbook of Avian Body Masses'' by John B. Dunning Jr. (Editor). CRC Press (1992), . is an overall green bird with red on the shoulders and some random flecks of red on the head and neck. The underwing primary coverts are red tipped yellow. A prominent white eye ring gives this species its name. In addition to the nominate, there are two very similar subspecies, ''callogenys'' and ''nicefori'', although the validity of the latte ...

Puerto Rican Parakeet
The Puerto Rican parakeet or Puerto Rican conure (''Psittacara maugei'') is an extinct species of parrot that was found on Mona Island and possibly in Puerto Rico. Description The bird was similar to the Hispaniolan parakeet (''Psittacara chloropterus''), of which it was once considered a subspecies (some sources, such as the IUCN, still follow this taxonomy.) Its feathers were a duller green, and the red markings on the wing were more extensive. Ecology The bird fed primarily upon seeds, fruits, nuts and berries. It may also have eaten leaf buds and flowers. Nesting took place in hollow trees, old woodpecker holes and arboreal termite nests. Behavior The Puerto Rican parakeet was a very gregarious bird, noted for its loud, continuous calling. While the bird was normally cautious, avoiding contact with humans, this lessened while feeding. As the bird often fed in farmers' fields on crops such as maize, this contributed to its widespread hunting. Extinction The las ...

Hispaniolan Parakeet
The Hispaniolan parakeet (''Psittacara chloropterus'') (Spanish: ''perico'' or ''periquito''), colloquially known as xaxabí, is a species of parrot in the family Psittacidae that is endemic to the island of Hispaniola (split between the Dominican Republic and Haiti). Description It is a medium-sized parakeet, evenly colored green, with a long, pointed tail, pale beak and legs, white eye-ring, and red patch on the wing's wrist area. The sexes are identical; the bird is highly gregarious, forming flocks which can surpass several dozen individuals. The only similar bird in its native range is the possibly introduced olive-throated parakeet, from which it can be readily differentiated, mainly by wing patches that are blue, instead of red. Habitat Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forest, subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, subtropical or tropical moist montane forest, and arable land; nonetheless, there are populations that live in urban areas, like ...

Socorro Parakeet
The Socorro parakeet (''Psittacara brevipes'') is a species of parrot endemic to Socorro Island in the Revillagigedo Islands, Mexico. Some ornithologists consider it to be a subspecies of the green parakeet (''Psittacara holochlorus''). Its natural habitat is tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests. The Socorro parakeet's mating season starts in November. Status It is threatened by habitat destruction due to feral sheep and predation by feral cats. At present, there is no clear evidence of population decline. However, due to the restricted distribution and small population size of this species, it may meet the IUCN criteria for a vulnerable species A vulnerable species is a species which has been Conservation status, categorized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as being threatened species, threatened with extinction unless the circumstances that are threatened species, ....Martínez-Gómez, J.
