They are found at rocky reefs in tropical oceans around the world and are mainly found deeper than ''Chaetodon''; often a depths below those possible in normal scuba diving. In the past they were commonly included in the genus ''Chaetodon''. They are whitish, yellow, black and dark brown, and reach in length. Species There are currently 13 recognized species in this genus: * ''Prognathodes aculeatus'' (Felipe Poey y Aloy, Poey, 1860) (Longsnout butterflyfish) * ''Prognathodes aya'' (David Starr Jordan, D. S. Jordan, 1886) (Bank butterflyfish) * ''Prognathodes basabei'' Richard Lawrence Pyle, Pyle & Randall K. Kosaki, Kosaki, 2016Pyle, R.L. & Kosaki, R.K. Andreas Buchwald Rechnitzer
Andreas Buchwald Rechnitzer (November 30, 1924 - August 22, 2005) was an American oceanographer. With Carl Hubbs, he discovered the striped yellow butterfly fish that served as the logo of the Birch Aquarium. He helped develop the first SCUBA diving training program for ocean scientists, which included such innovations as ditch-and-don, buddy breathing, and the buddy system. He was a member of the US Navy Office of Naval Research team that negotiated the purchase of the bathyscape ''Trieste'', and was the scientist in charge of Project Nekton in 1960, during which the ''Trieste'' entered the Challenger Deep, the deepest surveyed point in the world's oceans. For this he received the Navy Distinguished Civilian Service Award. He joined the scientific staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, where he was the Oceanographer of the Navy from 1970 to 1984, and was the Senior Scientist at Science Applications International Corporation from 1985 to 1998. Butterflyfish
The butterflyfish are a group of conspicuous tropical marine fish of the family Chaetodontidae; the bannerfish and coralfish are also included in this group. The approximately 129 species in 12 genera are found mostly on the reefs of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. A number of species pairs occur in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, members of the huge genus ''Chaetodon''. Butterflyfish look like smaller versions of angelfish (Pomacanthidae), but unlike these, lack preopercle spines at the gill covers. Some members of the genus ''Heniochus'' resemble the Moorish idol (''Zanclus cornutus'') of the monotypic Zanclidae. Among the paraphyletic Perciformes, the former are probably not too distantly related to butterflyfish, whereas the Zanclidae seem far less close. Description and ecology Butterflyfish mostly range from in length. The largest species, the lined butterflyfish and the saddle butterflyfish, ''C. ephippium'', grow to . The common name references the brightly ...
