The ordination of women to ministerial or priestly office is an increasingly common practice among some contemporary major religious groups. It remains a controversial issue in certain Christian traditions and most denominations in which "ordination" (the process by which a person is understood to be consecrated and set apart by God for the administration of various religious rites) was often a traditionally male dominated profession (except within the diaconate and early heretical movement known as Montanism). In some cases, women have been permitted to be ordained, but not to hold higher positions, such as (until July 2014) that of bishop in the Church of England. Where laws prohibit sex discrimination in employment, exceptions are often made for clergy (for example, in the United States) on grounds of separation of church and state. ''Priestess'' is a live album by jazz composer, arranger, conductor and keyboardist Gil Evans recorded in 1977 and performed by Evans with an orchestra featuring David Sanborn, Arthur Blythe, Lew Soloff, and George Adams. Reception In 1984, this album was nominated for Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Group. Priestess (band)
Priestess is a Canadian rock band formed by singer/guitarist Mikey Heppner in Montreal, Quebec in 2002. Since its inception it has featured Heppner, singer/guitarist Dan Watchorn, singer/drummer Vince Nudo, and bassist Mike Dyball. Priestess were considered one of the most important bands in the early millennial "retro rock" movement, although they denied intentionally attempting to emulate the sounds of classic rock bands such as Black Sabbath and AC/DC, whom they idolized and to whom they were frequently compared. Priestess was established in the early 2000s after all but one of the members of punk band The Dropouts left the band. The sole remaining member, Heppner, sought new bandmates after changing the group's sound, and after a name change they released their first album, ''Hello Master'', on independent record label Indica in 2005. Priestess (rapper)
Alessandra Prete (born 20 August 1996), known by her stage name Priestess, is an Italian rapper from Apulia inspired by trap. Her influences include Rihanna, Etta James, and David Bowie whose music often explores the state of modern women through naming songs after women throughout every historical era of feminism. She was the subject of a documentary, ''The 4th Wave'' (in reference to fourth-wave feminism), directed by Savanah Leaf that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2019. Prete's fashion efforts include the campaign Spirit Of with Foot Locker, where she was one of three artists (one each from the UK, France, and Italy) selected; Prete acted as the "Gratitude Spirit." The Priestess ( hy, Քրմուհին, ''Qrmuhin'') written by Vigen Chaldranyan and renowned Armenian screenwriter Anahit Aghasaryan, draws inspiration from "an anonymous woman" recorded in the mysterious Fourth Century manuscript 'The History" by Armenian historian Agathangelos. Plot The film is set in Armenia, in present-day Yerevan, with scenes to the ancient past, circa 301 AD, a time when pagan gods and priestesses ruled the nation.
