Cornwall is administered as a Counties of England, county of South West England whose politics are influenced by a number of issues that make it distinct from the general political scene in the wider United Kingdom, and the political trends of neighbouring counties. Its position on the geographical periphery of the island of Great Britain is also a factor. Cornwall shares some of the political issues of the other Celtic nations, in particular Wales, and a notable movement exists seeking Cornish self-government movement, greater powers of self-government within the UK, similar to that achieved in Wales. The counties of England are a type of subdivision of England. Counties have been used as administrative areas in England since History of Anglo-Saxon England, Anglo-Saxon times. There are three definitions of county in England: the 48 ceremonial counties used for the purposes of Lord-lieutenant, lieutenancy; the 84 Metropolitan county, metropolitan and Non-metropolitan county, non-metropolitan counties for Local government in England, local government; and the 39 Historic counties of England, historic counties. In most cases a ceremonial county shares its name with a local government county, but often covering a wider area. The historic counties of England were mostly formed as shires or divisions of the earlier Heptarchy, kingdoms, which gradually united by the 10th century to become England.
