The Poet Laureate of Wisconsin is the poet laureate for the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The position and nominating commission was created by executive order from Governor Tommy Thompson on July 31, 2000. On February 4, 2011, Governor Scott Walker discontinued state sponsorship and sent a letter to the members of the Wisconsin Poet Laureate Commission to inform them it has been terminated. The Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters assumed the role of the commission May of that year. Poet Laureate
A poet laureate (plural: poets laureate) is a poet officially appointed by a government or conferring institution, typically expected to compose poems for special events and occasions. Albertino Mussato of Padua and Francesco Petrarca (Petrarch) of Arezzo were the first to be crowned poets laureate after the classical age, respectively in 1315 and 1342. In Britain, the term dates from the appointment of Bernard André by Henry VII of England. The royal office of Poet Laureate in England dates from the appointment of John Dryden in 1668. In modern times a poet laureate title may be conferred by an organization such as the Poetry Foundation, which designates a Young People's Poet Laureate, unconnected with the National Youth Poet Laureate and the United States Poet Laureate. Karla Huston
Karla Huston is an American poet in Appleton, Wisconsin. She was the Poet Laureate of Wisconsin, serving a two-year term from 2017 to 2018. Huston is the author of eleven chapbooks of poems, the latest ''Grief Bone'', (Five Oaks Press), and a full collection ''A Theory of Lipstick'' (Main Street Rag Publications), Huston's work has garnered many awards, including a Pushcart Prize for the poem "Theory of Lipstick." She received an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Wisconsin Library Association for her collection of the same title. Her writing has earned residencies at Ragdale Foundation as well as the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference. Her chapbook, ''Flight Patterns'' won the Main Street Rag Chapbook Contest in 2003. Huston has also been awarded three Jade Rings (one for fiction, two for poetry) from Wisconsin Writers Association (WWA). The Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress—commonly referred to as the United States Poet Laureate—serves as the official poet of the United States. During their term, the poet laureate seeks to raise the national consciousness to a greater appreciation of the reading and writing of poetry. The position was modeled on the Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom. Begun in 1937, and formerly known as the Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress, the present title was devised and authorized by an Act of Congress in 1985. Appointed by the Librarian of Congress, the poet laureate's office is administered by the Center for the Book. For children's poets, the Poetry Foundation awards the Young People's Poet Laureate. Kimberly Blaeser
Kimberly M. Blaeser (born 1955) is a Native American poet and writer enrolled in the White Earth Band of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe. She was the Wisconsin Poet Laureate 2015–16. Background Kimberly Blaeser was born in 1955 in Billings, Montana. Being of German and Anishinaabe Heritage, she grew up the White Earth reservation. In 2024 she will take up an appointment as the Lois and Willard Mackey Chair in Creative Writing at Beloit College. Career Blaeser was named Wisconsin Poet Laureate for 2015–2016 on January 7, 2015, by the Wisconsin Poet Laureate Commission. She resides in rural Lyons Township, Wisconsin. Blaeser works as Professor of English at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, where she teaches Creative Writing, Native American Literature, and American Nature Writing. Max Garland
Max Garland is the author of The Postal Confessions, winner of the Juniper Prize for Poetry 1995; Hunger Wide as Heaven, winner of CSU Poetry Center Open Competition 2006; and The Word We Used for It, winner of the Brittingham Poetry Prize 2017. He was inducted as a Fellow of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters in 2018. His poems, essays, and stories have appeared in Poetry, New England Review, Gettysburg Review, Georgia Review, Best American Short Stories, Creative Non-Fiction, and many other journals and anthologies. Bruce Dethlefsen
Bruce Dethlefsen is an American poet and teacher of poetry. He was Wisconsin Poet Laureate for 2011–2012, having been appointed by Governor James Doyle. He also served as secretary for the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets for six years. Early life and influences Bruce Dethlefsen was born to Frank and Patricia Dethlefsen in 1948. Bruce lived in Kansas City with his family until 1966. Frank worked as a grocer. According to Bruce, his father wanted him to attend college, but was not keen on Bruce's desire to be a poet, as he did not think it practical. Bruce recalls the early influence his mother had in encouraging creativity with words and rhythm. He says, I watched my mother, a displaced Okie, in her house-dress dance and sing around the kitchen. She loved to make up songs and little rhymes. The sillier, the better. She gave me permission to mess with words, the sound of words strung and unstrung together. E. E.
