1981 Plaid Cymru Presidential Election
The 1981 Plaid Cymru presidential election was held following the resignation of Gwynfor Evans, who had led the party since 1945. The election followed both the defeat at the 1979 general election of Evans in Carmarthen and the defeat earlier that year of the ''Yes'' side in 1979 devolution referendum. The 1984 Plaid Cymru presidential election was held following the resignation of Dafydd Wigley, who had led the party since 1981, on the grounds of his caring commitments linked to his children's health conditions. 2000 Plaid Cymru Leadership Election
The 2000 Plaid Cymru leadership election was held following the resignation on health grounds of Dafydd Wigley. Wigley had led the party since 1991 and saw them make a surprise breakthrough in the 1999 Assembly elections winning 17 seats and almost a third of the popular vote. The role of leader, at this point, was combined with the role of Party President. Three candidates stood. 2003 Plaid Cymru Leadership Election
The 2003 Plaid Cymru leadership election was held following the resignation of Ieuan Wyn Jones after a disappointing showing in the 2003 Assembly elections where the party fell from 17 to 12 seats. Ieuan Wyn Jones had led the party since 2000. Ieuan Wyn Jones initially resigned but then decided to contest the leadership election, he was challenged by Helen Mary Jones whom he had defeated three years previously, as well as Rhodri Glyn Thomas. Voting closed in 15 September, with the results announced at Cardiff's St David's Hall on September 18. The contest was narrowly won by Ieuan Wyn Jones in the final round with 2,603 votes, against Helen Mary Jones' 2,532. 2012 Plaid Cymru Leadership Election
The 2012 Plaid leadership election was held following the resignation of Ieuan Wyn Jones following the 2011 National Assembly for Wales election, 2011 Assembly Elections. Following the election Jones originally stated that he would resign in the first half of the Assembly term. Nominations officially opened on 3 January 2012. The leadership was fought by former Agriculture Minister Elin Jones, former party leader Dafydd Elis-Thomas and backbencher Leanne Wood. Simon Thomas declared his intention to run, but later withdrew in favour of Elin Jones. The Guardian reported that 7,863 members were entitled to vote, which was an increase in membership of 23% over the preceding four-month period.
