Penn Quakers Fencing
The Penn Quakers fencing team is the intercollegiate fencing team for the University of Pennsylvania, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The team competes in the Ivy League, within the NCAA Division I. The university first fielded a team in 1925. The team is currently coached by Andy Ma, former coach of several members of the Chinese National Fencing Team. History Penn has historically fielded a strong fencing team, capturing the national title three times since the program's inception in 1925. The program has produced 11 Olympians, most recently Cliff Bayer and Tamir Bloom in 2000. Paul Friedberg
Paul Ronald Friedberg (born December 14, 1959) is an American former fencer. Early and personal life Friedberg was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and is Jewish. His brother is Olympic fencer John Friedberg. Fencing career Fencing at the University of Pennsylvania for the University of Pennsylvania Quakers, Friedberg was four-time All-Ivy League, and a three-time All-American. He won the NCAA saber titles in 1979, 1980, and 1981. As a senior in 1981, Friedberg received the Class of 1915 Award, given to a senior class athlete who most closely approaches the ideal University of Pennsylvania student-athlete. He graduated with degrees from the University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Applied Science, and later earned an MBA from Penn's Wharton School of Business. David Micahnik
David Micahnik (born November 5, 1938) is an American fencer and fencing coach. He was born in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, and is Jewish. Biography Micahnik attended the University of Pennsylvania (1959), fencing for the University of Pennsylvania Quakers, and was a first-team All-Ivy selection in epee as a senior. He was the 1960 U.S. National Champion. He competed in the individual and team épée events at the 1960, 1964 and 1968 Summer Olympics. Micahnik won the individual epee title and took second in foil, and won gold medals with the epee and foil teams, at the 1965 Maccabiah Games. Shaul Gordon (born July 11, 1994) is a Canadian fencer in the sabre discipline. Gordon has represented the country on the international stage since 2013, and has competed at two Pan American Games and six World Fencing Championships. Gordon formerly resided in Richmond, British Columbia, but now lives and trains in Montreal, Quebec. Career In 2015, Gordon represented Canada at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, where he picked up a silver medal in the team sabre event. The Pan American Games (also known colloquially as the Pan Am Games) is a continental multi-sport event in the Americas featuring summer sports, in which thousands of athletes participate in a variety of competitions.
