Otava Publishing Company Ltd ( fi, Kustannusosakeyhtiö Otava, sv, Förlagsaktiebolaget Otava) is a major Finnish publisher of books. It was founded in 1890 and now is the second largest in Finland. It publishes fiction, non-fiction, books for teenagers and children, multimedia and teaching materials. The number of new titles a year exceeds 400. Otava has also been at the forefront of encyclopedia-publishing in Finland, with many well-known series, such as the ''Otavan Suuri Ensyklopedia'' (Otava's Big Encyclopedia). ''Hymy'' (Finnish: "Smile") is a monthly celebrity magazine published in Helsinki, Finland. It has been in circulation since 1959. History and profile ''Hymy'' was launched in 1959 by publisher Urpo Lahtinen and named after his wife Hymy Lahtinen. The magazine dealt with the experiences of the low income Finns and is an example of yellow journalism. It is based in Helsinki and is published monthly by Otavamedia Oy. In the 1960s and 1970s ''Hymy'' became a success with sensationalist stories containing much sex and gossip about Finnish celebrities, often verging on the invasion of privacy. Hotel Otava
Hotel Otava was a hotel in Pori, Finland, that operated between 1857 and 1985. On its time of closing, Hotel Otava was the oldest hotel-restaurant in Finland. The Neo-Renaissance building is designed by the Swedish architect C. J. von Heideken. Today it works as an office building for the city administration. Hotel Otava was named after the Finnish-language name of the constellation Big Dipper. The building is located on the same block with the 1853 established Pori Brewery and the 1884 opened Pori Theatre. It is a part of the old town which is listed as a cultural environment of national significance by the Finnish National Board of Antiquities. Zdeněk Otava
Zdeněk Otava (11 March 1902 – 4 December 1980) was a Czech operatic baritone who had a lengthy career at the Prague National Theatre that spanned more than four decades. Musicologist Alena Němcová stated that, "Otava's voice had a very wide vocal range and a marked intensity, and while light, was extremely varied in colour, with an even tone, free of vibrato; his diction was absolutely clear." In addition to his opera career, he was also a successful recitalist, particularly known for his performances of the contemporary Czech repertoire. His voice is preserved on a number of recordings made on the Supraphon label. Biography Born in Vítějeves, he worked as a choirboy in Brno where his singing drew the praise of Leoš Janáček. In his youth he studied violin and piano with Bohuslav Martinů. Big Dipper
The Big Dipper ( US, Canada) or the Plough ( UK, Ireland) is a large asterism consisting of seven bright stars of the constellation Ursa Major; six of them are of second magnitude and one, Megrez (δ), of third magnitude. Four define a "bowl" or "body" and three define a "handle" or "head". It is recognized as a distinct grouping in many cultures. The North Star ( Polaris), the current northern pole star and the tip of the handle of the Little Dipper (Little Bear), can be located by extending an imaginary line through the front two stars of the asterism, Merak (β) and Dubhe (α).
