Orangeburg is a hamlet and census-designated place, in the town of Orangetown, Rockland County, New York, United States. It is located north of Tappan, south of Blauvelt, east of Pearl River and west of Piermont. The population was 4,568 at the 2010 census. Geography Orangeburg is located at (41.044796, -73.953404). History Orangeburg was the site of Camp Shanks, known as "Last Stop USA", the largest World War II Army embarkation camp. A total of 1.3 million US service personnel en route to Europe were processed at a sprawling camp that covered most of the town. Orangeburg, also known as ''The Garden City'', is the principal city in and the county seat of Orangeburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population of the city was 13,964 according to the 2010 United States Census and declined to 12,704 in the 2020 census. The city is located 37 miles southeast of Columbia, on the north fork of the Edisto River. Two historically black institutions of higher education are located in Orangeburg: Claflin University (a liberal arts college) and South Carolina State University (a public university). History 18th century European settlement in this area started in 1704 when George Sterling set up a post here for fur trade with Native Americans. Orangeburg County comprises the Orangeburg, SC Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Columbia-Orangeburg-Newberry, SC Combined Statistical Area. The Orangeburg Dodgers were a minor league baseball team based in Orangeburg, South Carolina that played in the Western Carolinas League in 1974. They were an affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers and were managed by Bart Shirley. They finished in 4th place with a 63-71 record in their single season of play. The team had played in 1973 as the Orangeburg Cardinals, a co-op team featuring players from multiple franchises. Orangeburg Municipal Airport
Orangeburg Municipal Airport is a city-owned, public-use airport located two nautical miles (4 km) south of the central business district of Orangeburg, a city in Orangeburg County, South Carolina, United States. It is included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015, which categorized it as a ''general aviation'' facility. The airport does not have scheduled commercial airline service. During World War II, the 58th Flying Training Detachment, operated by the Hawthorne School of Aeronautics, trained both U.S. and French airmen at what was Hawthorne Field. The detachment was supervised by the 29th Flying Training Wing. Orangeburg Railway
The Orangeburg Railroad was a shortline railroad that served central South Carolina in the early part of the 20th century. The Orangeburg Railroad was built between 1911 and 1913. The line stretched 17.7 miles, between Orangeburg, South Carolina, and North, South Carolina. It opened in 1913 and provided Orangeburg with a line that connected to the Seaboard Air Line Railway at North. Plans to extend the line to Columbia, South Carolina; Charleston, South Carolina; and Augusta, Georgia, never materialized. By 1920, the line was in bad physical condition and in debt, and it was placed in receivership. It discontinued operations in October 1920. Orangeburg Pipe
Orangeburg pipe (also known as "fiber conduit", "bituminous fiber pipe" or "Bermico" or "sand pipe") is bituminized fiber pipe made from layers of ground wood pulp fibers compressed with and bound by a water resistant adhesive then impregnated with liquefied coal tar pitch. It was used from the 1860s through the 1970s, when it was replaced by PVC pipe for water supply and ABS pipe for drain-waste-vent (DWV) applications. The name comes from Orangeburg, New York, the town in which most Orangeburg pipe was manufactured, largely by the Fiber Conduit Company.
