Ocean Beach (also known as O.B.) is a beachfront neighborhood in San Diego, California. Geography Ocean Beach lies on the Pacific Ocean at the estuary of the San Diego River, at the western terminus of Interstate 8 in California, Interstate 8. Located about northwest of downtown San Diego, it sits south of Mission Bay, San Diego, California, Mission Bay and Mission Beach, California, Mission Beach and directly north of Point Loma, San Diego, Point Loma. Nat Young (surfer)
Robert Harold "Nat" Young (born 14 November 1947) is an Australian surfer and author. Surfing career Born in Sydney, New South Wales, Young grew up in the small coastal suburb of Collaroy. In 1964, he was runner-up in the Australian junior championship at Manly, and two years later was named world surfing champion in 1966. He won the title again (then called the Smirnoff World Pro/Am) in 1970. Young won three Australian titles in 1966, 1967 and 1969, and won the Bells Beach Surf Classic three times. Young featured in a number of important surf films of 1960s and 1970s including the classic 1973 surf movie '' Crystal Voyager'' and he also had a featured role as surfer Nick Naylor in the 1979 Australian drama film '' Palm Beach''. George Freeth
George Douglas Freeth Jr. (November 8, 1883 – April 7, 1919) was an American lifeguard, Surfing, surfer, and swimming instructor of English and Native Hawaiian descent. His mother's side of the family ranked among Hawaiian royal ministers under Kalākaua, King Kalakaua. His father's side of the family traced its ancestry to senior officers in the British military. Freeth's youth was spent in and around the ocean at Waikiki where he learned to swim and dive with local children. He later helped to renew interest in the traditional Hawaiian sport of surfing at Waikiki in the early twentieth century. He then popularized the sport in Southern California when he arrived in Los Angeles in 1907. Freeth worked as a lifeguard throughout his nearly dozen years living in the Golden State and helped to build the foundation for the state's professional lifeguard service. Duke Kahanamoku
Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku (August 24, 1890 – January 22, 1968) was a Hawaiian competition swimmer, lifeguard, and popularizer of the sport of surfing. A Native Hawaiian, he was born three years before the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. He lived to see the territory's admission as a state and became a United States citizen. He was a five-time Olympic medalist in swimming, winning medals in 1912, 1920 and 1924. Kahanamoku joined fraternal organizations: he was a Scottish Rite Freemason in the Honolulu lodge, and a Shriner. He worked as a law enforcement officer, an actor, a beach volleyball player, and a businessman. Surfing
Surfing is a surface water sport in which an individual, a surfer (or two in tandem surfing), uses a board to ride on the forward section, or face, of a moving wave of water, which usually carries the surfer towards the shore. Waves suitable for surfing are primarily found on ocean shores, but can also be found as standing waves in the open ocean, in lakes, in rivers in the form of a tidal bore, or wave pools. Interstate 8 (I-8) is an Interstate Highway in the southwestern United States. It runs from the southern edge of Mission Bay at Sunset Cliffs Boulevard in San Diego, California, almost at the Pacific Ocean, to the junction with I-10, just southeast of Casa Grande, Arizona. In California, the freeway travels through the San Diego metropolitan area as the Ocean Beach Freeway and the Mission Valley Freeway before traversing the Cuyamaca Mountains and providing access through the Imperial Valley, including the city of El Centro. San Diego Class 1 Streetcars
The San Diego Class 1 streetcar was a fleet of twenty-four unique streetcars that were originally built to provide transportation for the Panama–California Exposition in Balboa Park (San Diego), Balboa Park. The cars were designed by the San Diego Electric Railway Company (SDERy) under the leadership of John D. Spreckels and built by the St. Louis Car Company. These cars, which took the best elements from preceding models and integrated them into a new, modern streetcar design, went on to serve the many neighborhoods of San Diego until they were retired in 1939. The Panama–California Exposition was a World's fair, world exposition held in San Diego, California, between January 1, 1915, and January 1, 1917. The exposition celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal, and was meant to tout San Diego as the first United States port of call for ships traveling north after passing westward through the canal.
