O'Rourke Family
O'Rourke family of Livonia is a branch of Irish O'Rourkes. It descends from Cornelius O'Rourke (1736-1800), who went to Russian military service and became commandant of Dorpat. From his sons begin two family branches, the Livonian Lutheran branch and the Polish Roman Catholic branch. The most notable member of the family was Cornelius' son Joseph Cornelius O'Rourke (1772–1849), general in Russian service. Joseph's grandson Edward O'Rourke became bishop of Danzig. O'Rourke ( ga, Ó Ruairc) is an Irish Gaelic clan based most prominently in what is today County Leitrim. The family were the historic rulers of Breifne and later West Breifne until the 17th century. The O'Rourke Clan Chieftain is at odds with the O'Reilly Chieftain because both clans contest each other for the title Prince of Breifne. Livonia
Livonia ( liv, Līvõmō, et, Liivimaa, fi, Liivinmaa, German and Scandinavian languages: ', archaic German: ''Liefland'', nl, Lijfland, Latvian and lt, Livonija, pl, Inflanty, archaic English: ''Livland'', ''Liwlandia''; russian: Лифляндия, Liflyandiya) is a historical region on the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea. Joseph Cornelius O'Rourke
Count Joseph Cornelius O'Rourke (Russian language, Russian: Иосиф Корнилович Орурк; also Ioseph Kornilovich O'Rourke) (1772–1849) was a Russian nobility, Russian nobleman and military leader of Irish origin who fought in the Napoleonic Wars and achieved the rank of lieutenant general. He is noted for leading a campaign against the Turks in present-day Serbia, where a combined Russian and Serb army defeated the Ottoman Empire at Varvarin in 1810. O'Rourke was awarded the orders of Saint George, Alexander Nevsky, and Saint Anne for his military victories. His portrait was included in the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace, now part of the Hermitage Museum. A monument commemorating O'Rourke and his men was erected in Varvarin in 1910 on the centennial celebration of their victory against the Ottoman Empire, Turks. Edward O'Rourke
Edward O'Rourke, full name Eduard Alexander Ladislaus Graf O'Rourke ( pl, Edward Aleksander Władysław O'Rourke; lv, Eduards O'Rurke; October 26, 1876 in Minsk – June 27, 1943) was a Roman Catholic priest, bishop of Riga and the first head of the bishopric of the Free City of Danzig (Gdańsk). Early life O'Rourke was born October 26, 1876 in Basin, Minsk, Russian Empire (modern Belarus), to an aristocratic family of Irish ancestry, many of them high officers in the Russian military. The most prominent was Joseph Cornelius O'Rourke. They held imperial titles of the Russian Empire and of the German Holy Roman Empire, but also had petitioned to retain the Irish count title as well, which was granted by the Tsar in 1848. Stefan Michael Newerkla
Stefan Michael Newerkla (; born October 7, 1972) is an Austrian linguist, Slavist and philologist. He has taught as Professor of West Slavic Linguistics at the University of Vienna since 2004 and has been Full Member (Fellow) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences since 2018. Biography Born in Horn, Lower Austria, Newerkla majored in Slavonic Studies as well as English and American Studies at Vienna University (1996). He took his PhD (1998) at this very university with his doctoral thesis on diglossia in the school system of the Czech-speaking crown lands of the Habsburg Empire (1740–1918) featuring the West Bohemian district town of Plzeň.
