Lychnis Chalcedonica
''Silene chalcedonica'' (synonym (taxonomy), syn. ''Lychnis chalcedonica''), the Maltese-cross or scarlet lychnis, is a species of flowering plant in the family (biology), family Caryophyllaceae, native to central and eastern Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and northwestern China. Other common names include flower of Bristol, Jerusalem cross and nonesuch. It is a popular ornamental plant in gardens and has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Taxonomy This plant was first formally named as ''Lychnis chalcedonica'' by Carl Linnaeus in 1753. For purposes of taxonomic stability, the genus name ''Lychnis'' was formally rejected in 1994 and the name ''Silene'' was conserved. The plant is now known as ''Silene chalcedonica'', a name published by Ernst Hans Ludwig Krause in 1901. ''Medicago lupulina'', commonly known as black medick, nonesuch, or hop clover, is a plant of dry grassland belonging to the legume or clover family. Plants of the genus ''Medicago'', or bur clovers, are closely related to the true clovers (''Trifolium'') and sweet clover (''Melilotus''). Like the true clovers, black medick has three leaflets and a small, yellow flower closely resembling those of lesser trefoil. Black medick belongs to the same genus as alfalfa. Names The generic name ''Medicago'' is derived, via Latin , from Ancient Greek () "Median", because alfalfa was believed to have been introduced from the region of Media (now in Iran) in antiquity. The specific name ''lupulina'' means "wolf-like", and refers to the hop, or willow-wolf. Nonesuch Island
Nonsuch Island (originally Nonesuch Island) is part of the chain of islands which make up Bermuda. It is in St George's Parish, in the northeast of Bermuda. It is 5.7 ha (14 acres) in area and is at the east entrance to Castle Harbour, close to the south-easternmost point of Cooper's Island (now ostensibly part of the much larger St David's Island). Among the island's charted features is a bay called Nonsuch Bay. History In 1865 it served as a yellow fever quarantine hospital. On the eastern part of the island there still remains a small cemetery. In 1930 it served as a base for William Beebe and Otis Barton's landmark bathysphere dive. Environment The island is a wildlife sanctuary. It is wooded and with a small freshwater marsh, access to the public is strictly limited. __NOTOC__ The Nonesuch Mine is an abandoned copper mine and small ghost town in the southeast corner of the Porcupine Mountains State Park in Carp Lake Township, Ontonagon County, near Silver City, Michigan, United States. The area was given its name soon after Ed Less discovered the Nonesuch vein of copper on the Little Iron River in 1865. The name refers to the occurrence of the copper in sandstone: "nonesuch" ore existed elsewhere in the Copper Country. The life of Nonesuch was relatively short. It saw its first mining in 1867 and its last in 1912. The mine was opened and closed five different times, each under different ownership. The only time it made a profit was in the period 1879–1881. A US post office operated at Nonesuch from 1876 to 1887. Between 1881 and 1884 the town reached its peak with a population of about 300. The town included school with 30 students, as well as a boarding house, livery stable, markets, stage coach service, and a uniformed baseball team. ... Nonesuch Palace
Nonsuch Palace was a Tudor royal palace, built by Henry VIII in Surrey, England; it stood from 1538 to 1682–83. Its site lies in what is now Nonsuch Park on the boundaries of the borough of Epsom and Ewell in Surrey and the London Borough of Sutton. The palace was designed to be a celebration of the power and the grandeur of the Tudor dynasty, built to rival Francis I's Château de Chambord. Unlike most of Henry's palaces, Nonsuch was not an adaptation of an old building; he chose to build a new palace in this location because it was near to one of his main hunting grounds. However the choice of location was unwise, as there was no nearby supply of water suitable for domestic use. The palace cost at least £24,000 (over £10 million in 2021) because of its rich ornamentation and is considered a key work in the introduction of elements of Renaissance design to England. The Nonesuch River is a U.S. Geological Survey. National Hydrography Dataset high-resolution flowline dataThe National Map accessed June 30, 2011 river in southern Maine in the United States. It rises in Saco and travels northeast, then east, then southwest through the town of Scarborough, becoming the primary source of fresh water to the Scarborough Marsh and the Scarborough River. It has several brooks as tributaries. It is a small, winding river, tidal over its lower reaches, which large boats could not navigate. At one point a canal was constructed to follow its course. The work was constructed by the expedient of digging a shallow ditch along the planned course and letting the tidal action carry the loose soil out to sea. Nonesuch Records is an American record company and label owned by Warner Music Group, distributed by Warner Records (formerly called Warner Bros. Records), and based in New York City. Founded by Jac Holzman in 1964 as a budget classical label, Nonesuch has developed into a label that records critically acclaimed music from a wide range of genres. Robert Hurwitz was president of the company from 1984 to 2017. History Founding Nonesuch was founded in early 1964 by Jac Holzman to produce "fine records at the same price as a trade paperback", which would be half the price of a normal LP. To achieve this he initially licensed European recordings of classical music as it would be too expensive to record new material.
