National Churches In Rome
Charitable institutions attached to churches in Rome were founded right through the medieval period and included hospitals, hostels, and others providing assistance to pilgrims to Rome from a certain "nation", which thus became these nations' national church (Roman Catholicism), national churches in Rome (). These institutions were generally organized as confraternity, confraternities and funded through charity and legacies from rich benefactors belonging to that "nation". Often, they were also connected to national (ancestors of Rome's seminary, seminaries), where the clergymen of that nation were trained. The churches and their riches were a sign of the importance of their nation and of the prelates that supported them. Up to 1870 and Italian unification, these national churches also included churches of the Italian city states (now called "regional churches"). Santo Spirito Dei Napoletani
Santo Spirito dei Napoletani is a Roman Catholic church on via Giulia, in the Regola ''rione'' of Rome. It was the national church of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and is now the regional church for Campania. History In Pope Pius V's catalogue of churches, this church is known as 'S. Aura in strada Iulia' (Saint Aurea in the via Julia) and was then part of a monastery. It was dedicated to Saint Aurea, a martyr from Ostia. In the 14th century it was also known as 'Sant'Eusterio', as a result of the catalogue of Cencio Camerario (n. 232) and of the anonymous Turin catalogue, which states "Ecclesia s. Austerii de campo Senensi habet unum sacerdotem" (the church of s. Austerii in campo Senensi has one priest). By 1572 the church was in a poor state - that year, it and the monastery were assigned to the Confraternity of the Holy Spirit of the Neapolitans. San Giovanni Battista Dei Genovesi
San Giovanni Battista dei Genovesi (''Saint John the Baptist of the Genoans'') is a Roman Catholic church on via Anicia in the Trastevere district of Rome. It is the regional church for Genoa. It was built between 1481 and 1492 by the wealthy Genoan Meliaduce Cicala, treasurer of the Camera Apostolica. It was an addition to a hospital for Genoese sailors which Cicala built at porto di Ripa Grande. In 1533 the Confraternity of Genoans was founded to administer the church and the hospital - the latter continued to function until the mid 18th century. The church was rebuilt in 1737, with an apse added to its facade. It was then little altered until the mid 19th century, when a new facade was added and the interior redesigned. San Marco Evangelista in Agro Laurentino is a Catholic church in Rome, Italy on the Piazza Giuliani e Dalmati in the Giuliano-Dalmata quarter. The dedication to Saint Mark alludes to the presence in the area of Istrian and Dalmatian refugees (who fled the Julian March after the Second World War), as does the Lion of St. Mark above the portico. It was erected between 1970 and 1972 to plans of Ennio Canino and Cardinal Vicar Angelo Dell'Acqua consecrated it on 29 May 1972. Two popes have visited it: Pope Paul VI in April 1973 and Pope John Paul II in January 1984. Inside the church is a bronze Madonna by Perrotta and a bronze crucifix by U. Montalbano. In the crypt is a series of mosaics depicting the patron saints of the native nations of the Giuliano-Dalmati, i. e., northeastern Adriatic, refugees.
