National Unity Alliance
The National Unity Alliance ( ta, தேசிய ஐக்கியக் கூட்டமைப்பு) is a political alliance in Sri Lanka. Founded in 1999, the alliance ceased to exist in 2010 when its remaining members joined the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. However, Azath Salley subsequently assumed leadership of the party and the party is presently active.https://elections.gov.lk/en/political_party/political_party_list_E.html Present Status The National Unity Alliance's was re-activated by Mr. Azath S. Azath Salley
Mohamed Azath Sanoon Salley ( si, මොහොමඩ් අසාත් සනූන් සාලි) (born 18 September 1963) is a Sri Lankan politician and the eighth Governor of the Western Province. Salley was the deputy mayor of Colombo, and the founder/leader of the National Unity Front (NUF). He has two children, Amina (daughter) and Nafees (son). In May 2013, Salley was arrested and later released by the Sri Lankan Forces under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) after he supposedly called Muslims to launch an "armed struggle" during an interview., the charges were proven to be baseless and he was acquitted. Salley founded the National Unity Front, a National political party. He was a member of the Central Provincial Council. He worked in partnership with the United Arab Emirates High Commission in Colombo to help the needy during the Islamic Holy Month of Ramazan. Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna
Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP; ) is a Marxist–Leninist communist party and a former militant organization in Sri Lanka. The movement was involved in two armed uprisings against the government of Sri Lanka: once in 1971 (SLFP), and another in 1987–89 ( UNP). The motive for both uprisings was to establish a socialist state. The JVP was initially a small organisation that became a well-organised party that could influence mainstream politics. Its members campaigned openly for the left-wing coalition government, United Front. Following their disillusion with the coalition, they started an insurrection against the Dominion of Ceylon in early 1971, which intensified following the ban on the party. 2001 Sri Lankan Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Sri Lanka on 5 December 2001, just a little over a year after the last elections in October 2000. Background The People's Alliance (PA) government faced a blow when most of the SLMC MPs left the coalition. President Chandrika Kumaratunga tried to recruit the JVP to replace it, but this angered several PA MPs, thirteen of which defected to the opposition. A no-confidence motion was prepared; to forestall this, Kumaratunga called the election. More than 1,300 incidents of election violence were reported during the campaign. Wimalaweera Dissanayake () is a Sri Lankan politician and current member of parliament for Digamadulla District. He was elected on 18 August 2015 from United People's Freedom Alliance.
