Blythewood, South Carolina
Blythewood is a town in Richland and Fairfield counties, South Carolina, United States. It is a suburb of Columbia, South Carolina. The 2020 United States census puts the population at 4,772, up from 2,034 in 2010. Since 2000, the population has increased by 3,119 percent. It is part of the Columbia, South Carolina, Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located around 15 miles (24 kilometers) from downtown Columbia. Blythewood Road is one of the main thoroughfares, intersecting Interstate 77 at Exit 27. U.S. Route 21 also goes through Blythewood, intersecting Interstate 77 at exit 24. History Blythewood was originally named "Doko", a Native American term for a watering place. The town was named after Doko Depot, which was a stop along the railroad that ran between Charlotte and Columbia. In 1865, this railroad was destroyed by General Sherman. This is a List of National Historic Landmarks in South Carolina, United States. The United States' National Historic Landmark (NHL) program is operated under the auspices of the National Park Service, and recognizes buildings, sites, structures, districts, and objects according to a list of criteria of national significance. Route description SC 263 begins at an intersection with SC 764 (Main Street) in Eastover, Richland County. It travels to the northeast and leaves the city limits. The highway crosses Griffin Creek. Olympia is an urban unincorporated area and census-designated place (CDP) in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. It was first listed as a CDP prior to the 2020 census with a population of 1,087. The CDP is in western Richland County, bordered to the north by the city of Columbia, the state capital, and to the west, across the Congaree River, by the city of Cayce. The eastern half of the CDP is residential, while the western half is occupied by the Columbia Quarry of Vulcan Materials. Four locations in the CDP are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Olympia Armory is on Granby Lane in the northeast part of the CDP, the Olympia Mill School is on Olympia Avenue in the northern part of the CDP, and the Olympia Union Hall is on Silver Street in the northernmost part of the CDP, close to the Columbia city line. Ballentine is an unincorporated community in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. It is part of the Columbia, South Carolina metropolitan area. 2020 census As of the 2020 United States census, there were 8,110 people, 2,495 households, and 1,909 families residing in the CDP. History The community was named after the Ballentine family of pioneer settlers. In 1925, Ballentine had 50 inhabitants. There have been unsuccessful attempts to incorporate Ballentine as a town. South Carolina Highway 764 (SC 764) is a state highway in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The highway connects rural areas of Richland County with Eastover. Route description SC 764 begins at an intersection with U.S. Route 76 (US 76) and US 378 (Garners Ferry Road), northeast of McEntire Joint National Guard Base, and east-southeast of Horrell Hill, within Richland County. It travels to the southeast and crosses over Toms Creek. It curves to the south-southeast and crosses Ray Branch. The highway curves back to the southeast and begins paralleling railroad tracks; then, it enters Eastover. In town, it passes a U.S. Post Office before intersecting the southern terminus of SC 263 (Vanboklen Street). The highway crosses over Griffins Creek and leaves town.
