Wyoming Highway 318 (WYO 318) is a short east–west spur route off Wyoming Highway 270 in northeastern Platte County. Route description Wyoming Highway 318 begins at Wyoming Highway 270 in the small Town of Hartville. WYO 318 travels east as Hartville's Main Street for a mile till it reaches the old mining town of Sunrise at 1.09 miles. Upon reaching the former town, WYO 318 ends at a road closed sign as the mine property is gated. Sunrise, Wyoming
Sunrise was a company mining town of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company located in Platte County, Wyoming, United States. The entire site of the former mining district and town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. History In the 1880s the area around what would become Sunrise was an important area in the mining of copper. In 1890, Charles A. Guernsey, after whom the nearby town of Guernsey, Wyoming is named, founded the Wyoming Railway and Iron Company to exploit iron mining in the area. In 1898, the Colorado Fuel and Iron company began leasing mining rights in the area to improve its supply of iron. In 1904 Colorado Fuel and Iron bought the entire Sunrise Mine. Colorado Fuel and Iron hoped to make Sunrise a model company town. In the early 1900s company-owned houses, boarding houses, depots, a school, churches, shops, and other structures were built. Robert Mills Grant, known as Bob Grant (December 30, 1926 – March 1, 2012), was a third-generation rancher from Platte County in southern Wyoming and from 1983 to 1992 a Republican member of the Wyoming House of Representatives. Background Born in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Grant was a lifelong resident of nearby Wheatland, the only son of three children born to Duncan Paul Grant (1881-1975) and the former Mary Coquella (née Greenlee; 1897-1982) on the then third-generation Grant Ranch in the Richeau Hills. Duncan Grant was a son of Robert Grant (1847-1921) and the former Margaret Mitchell (1844-1928). This part of Platte County was a near wilderness when the first Grants arrived.
