Palo Pinto County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 28,409. The county seat is Palo Pinto. The county was created in 1856 and organized the following year. Palo Pinto County comprises the Mineral Wells micropolitan statistical area, which is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth combined statistical area. It is located in the western Cross Timbers ecoregion. History Native Americans The Brazos Indian Reservation, founded by General Randolph B. Marcy in 1854, provided a safety area from warring Comanche for Delaware, Shawnee, Tonkawa, Wichita, Choctaw, and Caddo. Within the reservation, each tribe had its own village and cultivated agricultural crops. Government-contracted beef cattle were delivered each week. Citizens were unable to distinguish between reservation and nonreservation tribes, blaming Comanche and Kiowa depredations on the reservation Indians. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark (RTHL) is a designation awarded by the Texas Historical Commission for historically and architecturally significant properties in the U.S. state of Texas. RTHL is a legal designation and the highest honor the state can bestow on a historic structure. Purchase and display of a historical marker is a required component of the RTHL designation process. Because it is a legal designation, owners of RTHL-designated structures must give 60 days' notice before any alterations are made to the exterior of the structure. Changes that are unsympathetic may result in removal of the designation and historical marker. More than 3,600 RTHL structures are spread throughout the state. Mineral Wells, Texas
Mineral Wells is a city in Palo Pinto and Parker Counties in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 16,788 at the 2010 census (14,644 in Palo Pinto and 2144 in Parker). The city is named for mineral wells in the area, which were highly popular in the early 1900s. History In 1919, Mineral Wells hosted the spring training camp for the Chicago White Sox, the year of the famous "Black Sox" scandal involving "Shoeless" Joe Jackson. Mineral Wells also hosted spring training for the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals in the 1910s and early 1920s. The baseball field was located in the center of town. In 1952, Mineral Wells was the host of the Republican state convention in which delegates divided between presidential candidates Dwight D. Eisenhower and Senator Robert A. Taft. Palo Pinto is a census-designated place (CDP) and unincorporated area, unincorporated community and county seat in Palo Pinto County, Texas, Palo Pinto County, Texas, United States. This was a new CDP for the United States Census 2010, 2010 census with a population of 333. Geography Palo Pinto is located at (32.769149, -98.300766). The CDP has a total area of , all land. History When legislation calling for organization of Palo Pinto County was passed in 1856, a community was designated to be built within 5 miles of the center of the county to serve as the seat of government. The county was formally organized in May 1857, and on August 18 of the same year, the first session of the county court was held, when the plans for the new county seat were discussed and enacted. State Highway 16 (SH 16) is a south–north state highway in the U.S. state of Texas that runs from Zapata on the boundary with Mexico to U.S. Highway 281 south of Wichita Falls. It is the longest state highway in Texas at almost , but is only the ninth-longest of any highway classification in the state. Route description SH 16 begins at an intersection at US 83 in Zapata. The route continues through south Texas ranchlands, then to the north through San Antonio's far south side. The routes enters San Antonio from the southeast, and goes around the west side of the city concurrent with Interstate 410. U.S. Highway 180 (US 180) is a US highway that runs from Valle, Arizona, to Hudson Oaks, Texas. A child route of U.S. Route 80, the Texas portion of U.S. 180 consists of two distinct segments. Separated by an approximately 105 mile stretch of roadway travelling through southeast New Mexico, the first segment travels through far west Texas from the New Mexico border near El Paso to the New Mexico border approximately 25 miles west of Carlsbad, New Mexico. The second segment begins on the Texas state line between Hobbs, New Mexico, and Seminole and travels east across the lower Panhandle and Cross Timbers regions, passing through the towns of Lamesa, Snyder, Albany, and Breckenridge. Texas State Highway 254
State Highway 254 (SH 254) is a short state highway completely within Palo Pinto County, Texas. The route was originally designated on September 21, 1937 on a route between Graham and Mineral Wells. By 1945, the route had been built, passing through Graford and ending on US 281 north of Mineral Wells. The highway continues as FM 1885 southeast to FM 920 near Weatherford. On January 31, 1969, it was shortened to its current route when SH 16 was extended north through Graham. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all of it land. Demographics As of the census of 2000, 578 people, 213 households, and 145 families resided in the city. The population density was 819.9 people per square mile (318.8/km). The 238 housing units averaged 337.6 per square mile (131.3/km). U.S. Route 281 (US 281) is a north–south United States Numbered Highway. At it is the longest continuous three-digit U.S. Route. The highway's northern terminus is at the International Peace Garden, north of Dunseith, North Dakota, at the Canadian border, where it continues as Highway 10. The route between Dunseith and the border is shared with North Dakota Highway 3. US 281 has two southern termini. The western terminus, known as International Blvd. in Hidalgo, begins from the McAllen-Hidalgo International Bridge. Interstate 20 in Texas (I-20) is a major east–west Interstate Highway in the Southern United States, running east from a junction with I-10 east of Kent, Texas, through the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex to the border with Louisiana near Waskom, Texas. The original distance of I-20 was from I-10 to the Louisiana border, reduced to the current distance of with the rerouting of I-20 in the 1980s and 1990s. I-20 is known as the Ronald Reagan Memorial Highway within the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. History I-20 in Texas was designated in 1959, and was to replace or run parallel to U.S. Route 80 (US 80).
