Summerfield is an unincorporated community in northeast Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is located sixteen miles east of the parish seat of Homer. History Summerfield was founded in 1868 by W. R. Kennedy. The community has a Baptist church, founded in 1881, and a Methodist church, founded in 1876. Education The Claiborne Parish School Board operates Summerfield High School, a Pre-Kâ12 high school, in Summerfield. Media Summerfield lies in proximity to the Monroe/El Dorado, Arkansas DMA market. Although in the Shreveport market, Monroe channels such as KTVE and KNOE can be received through an over the air antenna. Athens, Louisiana
Athens is a village in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 249 at the 2010 census. History The village was named after the ancient city of Athens, capital of Greece. Athens became the parish seat of Claiborne Parish in 1846, but in 1848 fire destroyed the courthouse and all the records in it. Soon thereafter the Claiborne Parish Police Jury decided to move the parish seat to its present location in Homer. Athens has been home to a Pilgrim's Pride poultry hatchery for many years. Their location in Athens was designated for closure early in 2009, along with other company businesses in nearby Arcadia in Bienville Parish, Choudrant in Lincoln Parish, and Farmerville in Union Parish, where the company maintained a processing and protein conversion plant. The Herbert S. Ford Memorial Museum is a museum of local history and culture housed in the former Claiborne Hotel at 519 South Main Street in Homer in Claiborne Parish in North Louisiana. The Homer Chamber of Commerce is headquartered inside the two-story museum, which is located across the historic town square from the Claiborne Parish Courthouse. Lisbon, Louisiana
Lisbon is a village in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 185 at the 2010 census. Lisbon is located east of the parish seat of Homer. In the late 19th century Lisbon was the location of the former Lisbon Academy, attended for a brief time by T. H. Harris, state superintendent of education from 1908 to 1940. Lisbon was the birthplace of another Louisiana educator, John Sparks Patton, a member of the Louisiana Public Service Commission from 1939 to 1944 who twice lost races for state superintendent to T. H. Harris. He is remembered as the first advocate of taxpayer-funded school textbooks. Lisbon should not be confused with the village of Lisbon in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana, which later evolved first into Bagdad and later into the city of Westlake. Homer, Louisiana
Homer is a town in and the parish seat of Claiborne Parish in northern Louisiana, United States. Named for the Greek poet Homer, the town was laid out around the Courthouse Square in 1850 by Frank Vaughn. The present-day brick courthouse, built in the Greek Revival style of architecture, is one of only four pre-Civil War courthouses in Louisiana still in use. The building, completed in 1860, was accepted by the Claiborne Parish Police Jury on July 20, 1861, at a cost of $12,304.36, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The other courthouses are in St. Francisville, St. Martinville and Thibodaux. The population of Homer was 2,747 in 2020. History Johnson donated land for the former Ashland High School. Haynesville is a town in northern Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, United States, located just south of the Arkansas border. The population was 2,327 at the 2010 census. Haynesville is known as the "Gateway to North Louisiana" and the "Butterfly Capital of Louisiana".
