De Graff, Kansas
De Graff is an unincorporated community in Butler County, Kansas, United States. It is located on U.S. Route 77 approximately north of I-35 (Kansas Turnpike) History In 1877, the Florence, El Dorado, and Walnut Valley Railroad Company built a branch line from Florence to El Dorado,''Marion County Kansas : Past and Present''; Sondra Van Meter; MB Publishing House; LCCN 72-92041; 344 pages; 1972. and a station called De Graff was built. In 1881, the rail line was extended to Douglass, then later to Arkansas City. The line was leased and operated by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. The line from Florence through Burns to El Dorado was abandoned in 1942. The original branch line connected Florence through El Dorado to Arkansas City. Towanda is a city in Butler County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 1,447. History Towanda was established in 1870 and incorporated in 1905. Towanda is an Osage-language name meaning "big village". An F4 tornado devastated the town on March 31, 1892, killing at least nine people and injuring 60. 21st century In 2010, the Keystone-Cushing Pipeline (Phase II) was constructed a few blocks west of Towanda (immediately west of SW River Valley Rd), running north to south through Butler County. Bois D'Arc, Kansas
Bois d'Arc is an unincorporated community in Butler County, Kansas, United States. It is located about six miles southeast of Augusta in Bloomington Township. History The name Bois d'Arc is taken from one of the names for a common tree in the area, the Osage Orange tree. The Osage Indians used these trees to make their bows. The post office was established December 21, 1892, and was discontinued March 31, 1904. The nearby Little Walnut River Pratt Truss Bridge is on the National Register of Historic Places. According to the National Register of Historic Places registration form, the bridge crosses Little Walnut Creek, one mile below where Hickory Creek flows into it. Douglass is a city in Butler County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 1,555. History 19th century The first settlement was made at Douglass in 1869. Douglass is named for its founder, Joseph W. Douglass, a storeowner who was fatally shot at the town site in 1873 while apprehending a suspected chicken thief. Douglass was incorporated as a city of the third class in 1879.
