National Reform Association (1844)
The National Reform Association was an American Radicalism (historical), radical Reformism, reformist political organization, founded in 1844 by radicals George Henry Evans, Thomas Ainge Devyr, John Windt and others with the aim of lobbying Congress to pass a wide range of Land reform, land reforms. The NRA campaigned with the slogan "Vote Yourself a Farm", and the organization managed to achieve a wave of 55,000 petitions from Americans calling on Congress to open up free public lands to homesteaders, which lead to the successful Homestead Acts, Homestead Act of 1862. The National Reform Association (NRA), formerly known as the National Association to Secure the Religious Amendment of the United States Constitution, is an organization that seeks to introduce a Christian amendment to the U.S. Constitution in order to make the United States a Christian state. Joshua Walmsley
Sir Joshua Walmsley (1794–1871) was an English businessman and Liberal Party politician. Life The son of John Walmsley, an architect, builder and marble mason, he was born in Liverpool on 29 September 1794, and educated at Knowsley, Lancashire, and Eden Hall, Westmorland. On the death of his father in 1807, Walmsley became a teacher in Eden Hall school, and after returning to Liverpool in 1811, he took a teaching position in Mr. Knowles's school. He entered the service of a corn merchant in 1814, and at the end of this engagement went into the same business himself. He was an early advocate of the repeal of the duty on corn, and was afterwards an active worker with Richard Cobden, John Bright, and others in the Anti-Cornlaw League. In 1826 he took the presidency of the Liverpool Mechanics' Institution. National Labor Union
The National Labor Union (NLU) is the first national labor federation in the United States. Founded in 1866 and dissolved in 1873, it paved the way for other organizations, such as the Knights of Labor and the AFL (American Federation of Labor). It was led by William H. Sylvis and Andrew Cameron. Organizational history The National Labor Union (NLU) followed the unsuccessful efforts of labor activists to form a national coalition of local trade unions. The NLU sought instead to bring together all of the national labor organizations in existence, as well as the "eight-hour leagues" established to press for the eight-hour day, to create a national federation that could press for labor reforms and help found national unions in those areas where none existed. National Reform Party (Hawaii)
The National Reform Party was a political party in the Kingdom of Hawaii that formed in the late 19th century, late in the history of the Kingdom and shortly before the United States annexation of Hawaii. In January, 1890, the National Reform Party was established in opposition to the Reform Party, drawing from the group ''Hui Kālaiāina'' and the Mechanics' and Workingmens' Political Protective Union. It was regarded as a moderate political party and supported Queen Liliuokalani and native Hawaiians; in turn, she formed her cabinet entirely from members of the National Reform Party. The other two main parties were both critical of the queen; the conservative Reform Party said she was too liberal and the Liberal Party accused her of being too conservative. Successful candidates included John Adams Cummins and Paul Neumann.
