Background Ezra was born in Beirut, Lebanon to a Sephardic Jewish family. The roots of the Nahmad family are in Aleppo, where his father, banker Hillel Nahmad lived until just after World War II. Following the Syrian anti-Jewish violence in 1949, his father moved to Beirut, where Ezra and his brothers sold English novels to US sailors stationed there. Hillel "Helly" Nahmad (born 23 November 1976) is an independent British art dealer of Syrian and Lebanese descent. Early life Hillel "Helly" Nahmad was born in November 1976, the son of the art dealer Ezra Nahmad. He attended St Paul's School, before reading History of Art at the Courtauld Institute of Art. In 1997, he had Italian nationality. Career In 1998 Nahmad founded an eponymous modern art gallery in Cork Street, Mayfair, specialising in works by Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, René Magritte, Kasimir Malevich and Joan Miró among others. This gallery is not to be confused with a different gallery of the same name based in New York, opened by another Nelly Nahmad, his cousin and the son of his uncle David, and which operates as a completely separate entity. Helly Nahmad (born circa 1978) is an American art dealer and art collector. In 2000, he founded the Helly Nahmad Gallery in Manhattan, New York, which holds several fine art exhibitions each year featuring artists such as Pablo Picasso, Chaïm Soutine, Francis Bacon, and Giorgio de Chirico. In 2014, he was sentenced to 12 months in prison (and served four) after pleading guilty to a federal charge, "operating an illegal gambling business". In 2021, he was pardoned by President Donald Trump. In 2018, Nahmad bought Picasso's ''Young Girl with a Flower Basket'' painting for $115 million.
