Museum
A museum ( ; plural museums or, rarely, musea) is a building or institution that cares for and displays a collection of artifacts and other objects of artistic, cultural, historical, or scientific importance. Many public museums make these items available for public viewing through exhibits that may be permanent or temporary. The largest museums are located in major cities throughout the world, while thousands of local museums exist in smaller cities, towns, and rural areas. Museums have varying aims, ranging from the conservation and documentation of their collection, serving researchers and specialists, to catering to the general public. The goal of serving researchers is not only scientific, but intended to serve the general public. There are many types of museums, including art museums, natural history museums, science museums, war museums, and children's museums. According to the International Council of Museums (ICOM), there are more than 55,000 museums in 202 countrie ...

Casa Das Histórias Paula Rego
The Casa das Histórias Paula Rego (‘’House of Stories Paula Rego’’) is a museum in Cascais, Lisbon District, on the Portuguese Riviera, designed by the architect Eduardo Souto de Moura to house some of the works of the artist Paula Rego (1935 – 2022). Design On the site of the disused tennis courts of the former Sporting Club of Cascais, the building designed by Souto De Moura, who was personally chosen by Paula Rego, uses the region's historical architecture, particularly the nearby Palace of Sintra, in a contemporary way. It was designed to be fully in keeping with her wishes, having indicated that it should be “fun, lively and also a bit mischievous”. Its two pyramid-shaped towers and the red-coloured concrete are very distinctive and the previously existing mature trees of the park have been incorporated as elements in the design. The building consists of four wings, of different heights and sizes, subdivided into connecting rooms that are laid out around a ...

Beau-Séjour Palace
The Palace of Beau-Séjour ( pt, Palácio do Beau-Séjour) is a 19th-century Portuguese manor house situated in the civil parish of São Domingos de Benfica, municipality of Lisbon. History In 1849, the ''Quinta das Louras'' (or ''Quinta das Loureiras'') was acquired by D. Ermelinda Allen de Almeida (then Viscountess of Regaleira) from João Veríssimo de Barros Viana and his wife, D. Maria Inácia dos Santos. The name of the ''quinta'' (estate) was within a short time changed to ''Beau-Séjour;'' the house was constructed following purchase of the estate by the Viscountess, and featured a landscaped French formal garden. In 1859, the estate was sold by D. Isabel Allen Palmeiro, Baroness of Regaleira (niece and heiress to the Viscountess), to António José Leite Guimarães, Baron of Glória (1806-1876). The Baron ultimately proceeded to repair the ''azulejos'' tiles (using tile from the Roseira tile factory). Following his death (1876), ''Beau-Séjour'' passed into the hands of ...

Astronomical Observatory Of Lisbon
The Lisbon Astronomical Observatory ( pt, Observatório Astronómico de Lisboa) is an astronomical observatory located in ''Tapada da Ajuda'', in the civil parish of Alcântara, municipality of Lisbon. Recognized internationally for its quality of work in the field of positioning astronomy (since the 19th century), in 1992, it became a dependency of the University of Lisbon (and later, part of the Faculty of Sciences), responsible for scientific and historical research, along with media relations. History From an 1812 map, there existed in the ''Alto da Casa Branca'' in the Tapada of Ajuda an older observatory. The observatory was born from great controversy between French astronomer Hervé Faye (1814-1902), then director of the Observatory of Paris, and Peters, an astronomer at the Russian Observatory of Pulkova, on the parallax of the star of Argelander. The construction of the Lisbon observatory was due to a strong desire to build an institution that was a reference in Portugu ...

Archaeological Museum Of São Miguel De Odrinhas
The Archaeological Museum of São Miguel de Odrinhas in Sintra municipality, Lisbon District, Portugal owes its existence to the collection by the Hermitage of São Miguel of Epigraphy, epigraphic stones found amongst the Roman ruins in the neighbourhood. Around the year 30 B.C. Olisipo (Roman Lisbon) received from Augustus the status that allowed it to combine Roman law with its own ancient laws, thus permitting full integration into the Roman Empire. Most of its important families lived outside Lisbon in villas and many of the estates were located in the Sintra area. In 1955, Sintra Town Council first proposed the construction of a small museum to bring together in Odrinhas the collection of the Hermitage, which had by then been dispersed, as well as items discovered more recently. The museum, designed by Alberto Castro Nunes and António Maria Braga, winners of the Rafael Manzano Prize, Rafael Manzano Prize for New Traditional Architecture, in collaboration with Léon Krier, wa ...

Ajuda National Palace
The Palace of Ajuda ( pt, Palácio da Ajuda, ) is a neoclassical monument in the civil parish of Ajuda in the city of Lisbon, central Portugal. Built on the site of a temporary wooden building constructed to house the Royal family after the 1755 earthquake and tsunami, it was originally begun by architect Manuel Caetano de Sousa, who planned a late Baroque-Rococo building. Later, it was entrusted to José da Costa e Silva and Francisco Xavier Fabri, who planned a magnificent building in the modern neoclassical style. Over time, the project underwent several periods when the construction was stopped or slowed due to financial constraints or political conflicts. When the Royal Family had to flee to Brazil (in 1807), following the invasion of Portugal by French troops, the work proceeded very slowly with Fabri taking charge of the project, later followed by António Francisco Rosa. Lack of financial resources would also result in the scaling down of the project. The constructio ...

Santa Marta Lighthouse (Cascais)
The Santa Marta Lighthouse is situated to the south of the centre of Cascais, Lisbon District, Portugal, on the estuary of the River Tagus, providing a light for the Cascais Bay and for the town's new marina. It is a quadrangular masonry tower covered with white tiles, with blue horizontal stripes and a red lantern. The lighthouse was built on the grounds of the Santa Marta Fort, which now houses a lighthouse museum. History The Fort of Santa Marta was probably built in the 1640s, later than of the other fortresses that are distributed along the coast of Cascais, since it was not mentioned in the inventory of forts of Cascais made in 1646. This fortress was built with the intention of preventing the approach of enemies to the Cascais Bay area. In the second half of the eighteenth century the fortress was the object of additional work, the most significant being that of 1762–1763, during which the parapet was widened, and that of 1793, in which battery spaces and quarters were ...

History of the building The two-storey building dates back to the 18th century. It has since been enlarged by work carried out in the 20th century, particularly in 1918 when three separate buildings were joined together.
