Murray River Council
The Murray River Council is a local government area in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. This area was formed in 2016 from the merger of Murray Shire with Wakool Shire. The combined area comprises and covers the northern bank of the Murray River and hinterland from Moama downstream to Tooleybuc. At the time of its establishment, the estimated population of the area was . Main towns and villages The largest town in Murray River Council is Moama in the far south east. Moama
Moama ( or ) is a town in the Riverina district of southern New South Wales, Australia, in the Murray River Council local government area. The town is directly across the Murray River from the larger town of Echuca in the neighbouring state of Victoria, to which it is connected by a bridge. At the 2016 census, Moama had a population of 5,620. History Maiden's Punt The settlement where Moama now stands was founded by James Maiden in the mid-1840s, beginning as a stopping-point for stock and cargo waiting to cross the Murray River by punt. Maiden arrived in the district in 1840; he had been hired to caretake Jeffries' station about from the junction of the Campaspe River and the Murray River. He recognised a business opportunity and travelled to Seymour where he built a punt, which he then transported back to the Murray. Wakool
Wakool is a town in the western Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. Wakool is in the Murray River Council local government area, south west of the state capital, Sydney and north-west of Melbourne. At the , Wakool had a population of 297. History Wakool Post Office opened on 1 January 1870 and closed in 1874. It reopened in 1926. Closer settlement of the Wakool area commenced in the 1890s and the town grew around a railway station established on the line between Echuca and Balranald. In 1942, rice growing was established in the area. Other industries include wool and cattle. Speewa is a rural locality in the Riverina District of New South Wales, Australia near the Murray River in Murray River Council local government area. Moulamein
Moulamein is a small town in New South Wales, Australia, in the Murray River Council local government area. At the , Moulamein had a population of 484 . Moulamein is the oldest town in the Riverina. The town is located between Balranald, Hay, Deniliquin and Swan Hill, at the junction of the Edward River and Billabong Creek. The name Moulamein is derived from a local Aboriginal word meaning "the meeting of the waters". The climate of this area is semi-arid, and the area is rich in birdlife such as waterfowl, wedge-tailed eagles and emus. This area also has many kangaroos. Mathoura
Mathoura is a small town in the Riverina region of southern New South Wales, Australia, in the Murray River Council local government area. At the , Mathoura had a population of 938. The town's name is derived from an aboriginal word for 'windy'. History In 1848 a reserve was established on Gulpa Creek by Surveyor Townsend. The locality became known as Redbank. By 1853 W. Moore Carter had established an inn at Redbank and in 1856 he was permitted to purchase at £2 10s. per acre. By 1860 Carter had about under cultivation, including a vineyard. A petition in 1859 called on the Government to put up the reserve at Redbank for sale. Kyalite
Kyalite is a locality on the Wakool River in the Riverina district of the Australian state of New South Wales. It is part of Balranald Shire and is approximately south west of the state capital Sydney and north west of Melbourne. Kyalite was formerly known as Wakool Crossing. At the 2006 census, Kyalite had a population of 108. History Kyalite lies within the traditional country of the Muthi Muthi Aboriginal people. Wakool Crossing The village of Wakool Crossing (the site of present-day Kyalite) was founded by Henry Talbett, who in about 1848 established a punt service across the Wakool River at the location.
