Mont-Laurier
Mont-Laurier () is a town and incorporated municipality in northwest Quebec, Canada, located on the banks of the Lièvre River (''Rivière du Lièvre''), a tributary of the Ottawa River. Known as the "Capital of the Haute-Laurentides", the motto of the town is ''Laurus elationis praemium'', which translates to "Lift the laurels of reward". The demonym for its inhabitants is ''Lauriermontois''. According to the 2021 Canadian census, the population of Mont-Laurier is 14,180. It is the seat of Antoine-Labelle Regional County Municipality and the judicial district of Labelle. History The territory was originally inhabited by Oueskarinis, a sub tribe of Algonquians. The European settlers came from Sainte-Adèle in 1866, and the place was originally called ''Rapide-de-l'Orignal'' (English: Moose Rapids) in 1885, by Solime Alix. Quebec Route 117
Route 117, the Trans Canada Highway Northern Route, is a provincial highway within the Canadian province of Quebec, running between Montreal and the Quebec/Ontario border where it continues as Highway 66 east of McGarry, Ontario. It is an important road since it is the only direct route between southern Quebec and the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region. Route 117 was formerly Route 11 and ran from Montreal north towards Mont-Laurier and then followed the Gatineau River south towards Gatineau. This routing is joined with Autoroute 15 from Montreal northwards towards Mont Tremblant. Route 117 also takes in the former Quebec Routes 58 and 59. Along with Autoroute 15 to Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, it is also listed as a branch of the Trans-Canada Highway. Laurentides—Labelle is a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada since 2004. Geography The district is located north of Gatineau and northwest of Montreal, in the Quebec region of Laurentides. It includes the Regional County Municipalities of Antoine-Labelle, and Les Laurentides, and the eastern part of Les Pays-d'en-Haut. Labelle (provincial Electoral District)
Labelle is a provincial electoral district in the Laurentides region of Quebec, Canada that elects members to the National Assembly of Quebec. It notably includes the municipalities of Mont-Laurier, Mont-Tremblant, Rivière-Rouge, Mont-Blanc, Lac-des-Écorces and Labelle. It was originally created for the 1912 election from part of the Ottawa electoral district. Its final election was in 1970. It disappeared in the 1973 election and its successor electoral district was Laurentides-Labelle. However, Laurentides-Labelle disappeared in the 1981 election and its successor electoral district was the re-created Labelle. In the change from the 2001 to the 2011 electoral map, its territory was unchanged. Saint-Aimé-du-Lac-des-Îles is a municipality in the Laurentides region of Quebec, Canada, part of the Antoine-Labelle Regional County Municipality. The village itself is located just off Quebec Route 309 at the southern end of Lake of Islands (''Lac des Îles''). History In 1891, the parish of Saint-Aimé-du-Lac was founded. In 1907, the post office opened, named Lac-des-Îles after the nearby Lake of Islands (''Lac des Îles''). Lièvre River
The Lièvre River (french: Rivière du Lièvre; ) is a river in western Quebec which flows south from the Mitchinamécus reservoir and empties into the Ottawa River at Masson-Angers. The river is long and drains an area of . The river's name is an adaptation of its former French name ''Riviere aux Lièvres'', "River of the Hares". The 1908 landslide at Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette and the earlier 1903 clay landslide at Leda both occurred on this river. At one time, the river was used to transport logs downstream to sawmills located near the river's mouth. In 1928, a paper mill was built near the mouth of the river. On December 18, 1998, this mill was bought from Industries James Maclaren Inc. by private investors and became Papier Masson Ltee. In turn, the White Birch Paper Company bought it in January 2006. Laurentides
The Laurentides () is a region of Quebec. While it is often called the Laurentians in English, the region includes only part of the Laurentian mountains. It has a total land area of and its population was 589,400 inhabitants as of the 2016 Census. The area is the traditional territory of the Algonquin First Nation. French Canadians began settlement in the first half of the 19th century, establishing an agricultural presence throughout the valleys. Sainte-Adèle
Sainte-Adèle () is a municipality in Quebec, Canada, and is part of the Les Pays-d'en-Haut Regional County Municipality. It lies on Route 117 about north-west of Montreal. Its tourism-based economy centres on its skiing and hotel industry. Sainte-Adèle had a population of 12,137 as of 2011. History In 1842 Augustin-Norbert Morin purchased land in the area that would become Sainte-Adèle for 8 ¢ per arpent, which colonists arriving soon after then purchased from him for $8 CAD per arpent. The town of Sainte-Adèle was founded in 1855. A rail line was constructed and the first Canadian Pacific Railway train arrived in the town in 1891. The railway was used primarily to transport wood, cattle, dairy products, and mail.
