Mining in Mexico represented 2.4% of the nation's gross domestic product in 2023 and employed 350,000 people in 2020. Mexico is the world's largest producer of silver and a globally significant producer of gold, copper and zinc. In 2020, Mexico produced the world's 12th largest volume of minerals by value. Since 2018, Mexico's left-wing president has been taking a firmer stance towards mining companies and reforming mining regulations. Mariano Abarca
Mariano Abarca Roblero (1958–2009) was a community activist known for leading opposition against mining by Blackfire Exploration in his community of Chicomuselo in the state of Chiapas in Southern Mexico. He was a member of the Red Mexicana de Afectados por la Minería (REMA). He was assassinated on November 27, 2009 and was survived by his wife and four children. Assassination Mariano Abarca was assassinated on the night of November 27, 2009 in Chicomuselo in front of his house. Abarca was shot in the head and chest by a man on a motorcycle who was allegedly a Blackfire employee. Mariano Abarca had previously been abducted in August 2009, and again received death threats in the week and had filed a complaint against the company one day prior to his death. The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) is a global network of investigative journalists with staff on six continents. Chicomuselo
Chicomuselo is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas, and also the name of the municipality's largest settlement and the seat of the municipal government. The municipality has an area of 1,043 km². As of 2010, the municipality had a total population of 31,515. As of 2010, the town of Chicomuselo had a population of 5,938. Other than the town of Chicomuselo, the municipality had 272 localities, the largest of which (with 2010 populations in parentheses) were: Pablo L. Baryte
Baryte, barite or barytes ( or ) is a mineral consisting of barium sulfate ( Ba S O4). Baryte is generally white or colorless, and is the main source of the element barium. The ''baryte group'' consists of baryte, celestine (strontium sulfate), anglesite (lead sulfate), and anhydrite (calcium sulfate). Baryte and celestine form a solid solution (Ba,Sr)SO4. La Revancha Mine
La Revancha mine, full name Ampliación La Revancha and often known as the Chicomuselo baryte mine is a baryte mine, located in Chicomuselo, in Chiapas, Mexico. The mine located in North Americas largest baryte reserves. The mine opened in 2007, and was met with opposition from the local community, led by activist Mariano Abarca, who was assassinated in 2009. La Negra Mine
La Negra mine is a silver mine in the Mexican state of Querétaro, owned by Excellon Resources. Description La Negra is a silver mine in Querétaro, Mexico. The mine has thirteen known ore bodies, overwhelmingly of silver, but also with smaller quantities of gold, zinc and lead. The mine has a processing mill that can process 3,000 tons-per-day. Tailings from the mine are held behind five tailings dams. The dams are located upstream of the Maconí River which, which after five kilometers reaches the Moctuzuma River. When active, it produced up to three-million ounces of silver-equivalent per year. In 2023, the mine had 15.1 million ounces of silver in reserves.
