Mettet (; wa, Metet) is a municipality of Wallonia located in the province of Namur, Belgium. On 1 January 2006 Mettet had 11,977 inhabitants. The total area is 116.78 km², giving a population density of 103 inhabitants per km². The municipality consists of the following districts: Biesme, Biesmerée, Ermeton-sur-Biert, Furnaux, Graux, Mettet, Oret, Saint-Gérard, and Stave. Circuit Jules Tacheny Mettet
The Circuit Jules Tacheny Mettet is a motor racing circuit in Mettet, Wallonia (Belgium), southeast of Charleroi. The circuit was finalized in 2010 near the old street circuit. History Motorcycle racing During the early 1920s motorcycle racers started to race around a circuit composed of local streets surrounding the Belgian city of Mettet. The first motorcycle Grand Prix Entre Sambre et Meuse was held in 1928. Belgian driver Albert Breslau won the first race on an AJS. The last edition of the original motorcycle Grand Prix of Mettet was run in 1937. After World War II Jules Tacheny was appointed president of the Royal Motor Union de l’Entre Sambre et Meuse (RMUESM). Tacheny won the Senior category of the first post-war version of the Grand Prix in 1946. The overall Grand Prix was won by Roger Laurent on a Norton. Biesme
Biesme (; wa, Bieme) is a village of Wallonia and a district of the municipality of Mettet, located in the province of Namur, Belgium. History and heritage There has been a settlement in the area at least since the time of the Merovingians. During the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the counts of Namur. The village church, dedicated to Saint Martin, was built in the 11th century. The nave and the tower are Romanesque in style, while the larger transept and chancel are Gothic. Inside, the church is decorated with stuccoed ceilings from 1760. In Biesme there is also a castle, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries and surrounded by a park. North of the village, towards Mettet, there is a chapel dedicated to Saint Roch, built in 1635 in attempt to ward of the plague. Ermeton-sur-Biert
Ermeton-sur-Biert ( wa, Ermeton-so-Bier) is a village of Wallonia and a district of the municipality of Mettet, located in the province of Namur, Belgium. There is a 14th-century castle in the village, which since 1936 has been in use as Ermeton Abbey and in 1973 was designated a heritage site. History The lordship of Ermeton was created in the early 14th century by John I, Marquis of Namur. The last heir to the lordship, Henry de Villermont, died in combat in 1914. Alain Crépin
Alain Crepin (born 28 February 1954) is a Belgian saxophonist, composer, music educator and conductor. Crepin was born in Mettet near Dinant. He began his studies for saxophone, cello and piano at the Music Academy of Dinant. He studied at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, and studied under François Daneels, Roland Cardon, Yvon Ducène and Jacques Leduc From 1975 to 1981 he was solo saxophonist in Musik Corps of the Gendarmerie and from 1981 to 1983 he also worked as a saxophonist in the Large Band of the Belgian Guides in Brussels. In 1984 he became conductor the band ''Chasseurs Ardennais''. In 1985 he became music director of the Band of the Belgian Air Force. He has performed with the saxophone quartet ''Dinant''. Furnaux
Furnaux ( wa, Furnå) is a village of Wallonia and a district of the municipality of Mettet, located in the province of Namur, Belgium. The discovery of remains from Roman times in Furnaux indicates that the village has been inhabited since at least the first century AD. The village church is a Gothic building from the 16th century which has been rebuilt frequently during the centuries. It contains unusually well-preserved funerary monuments from the same century, as well as an exceptional baptismal font in Romanesque style from the 12th century, made of black marble from Dinant. Florennes
Florennes (; wa, Florene) is a municipality of Wallonia located in the province of Namur, Belgium. As of 1 January 2006, Florennes has a total population of 10,754. The total area is 133.55 km² which gives a population density of 81 inhabitants per km². The municipality consists of the following districts: Corenne, Flavion, Florennes, Hanzinelle, Hanzinne, Hemptinne, Morialmé, Morville, Rosée, Saint-Aubin and Thy-le-Bauduin.
