Metcalfe County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. Its county seat is Edmonton. The county was founded in May 1860 and named for Thomas Metcalfe, Governor of Kentucky from 1828 to 1832. Metcalfe County is part of the Glasgow, KY Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Bowling Green-Glasgow, KY Combined Statistical Area. Thomas Metcalfe (Kentucky)
Thomas Metcalfe (March 20, 1780 – August 18, 1855), also known as Thomas Metcalf or as "Stonehammer", was a U.S. Representative, Senator, and the tenth Governor of Kentucky. He was the first gubernatorial candidate in the state's history to be chosen by a nominating convention rather than a caucus. He was also the first governor of Kentucky who was not a member of the Democratic-Republican Party. At age 16, Metcalfe was apprenticed to his older brother and became a stonemason. He helped construct the Green County courthouse, known as the oldest courthouse in Kentucky. Later, political opponents would mock his trade, giving him the nickname "Old Stone Hammer." His political career began with four terms in the Kentucky House of Representatives. His service was interrupted by the War of 1812, in which he commanded a company in the defense of Fort Meigs. Sulphur Well, Kentucky
Sulphur Well is an unincorporated community located in Metcalfe County, Kentucky, United States. History Sulphur Well is named for a vein of mineral water a local landowner discovered while drilling for salt before the American Civil War. The landowner then began operating a hotel near the mineral well, and a village grew up in the area. By 1878, the community had a school, and a post office was established on July 30, 1879. In 1883, the community was reported to have a population of 100, with several stores, a hotel, and a flour mill. 'Knob Lick' is an unincorporated community in Metcalfe County, Kentucky, United States. Knob Lick is located on Kentucky Route 70, northwest of Edmonton. Knob Lick has a post office with ZIP code 42154. History Knob Lick was settled in the 1790s as part of a tract of land granted to Austin Allen. The community was originally known as Antioch after the local church, which opened in 1838. A post office opened on June 10, 1848, under the name Knob Creek; the name was changed to Antioch in 1851, and the post office closed in 1857. Summer Shade, Kentucky
Summer Shade is a small unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Metcalfe County, Kentucky, United States. Originally the area was known as Sartain Precinct and later as Glover's Creek; W.M. Riggs, the postmaster, changed the name to Summer Shade in 1872. The rural-dominated area is home to the Kingsford Charcoal factory. State highway 90, connecting Glasgow to the Dale Hollow Lake area, runs through Summer Shade. There was one school in Summer Shade that is formerly known as Summer Shade Elementary School. It went from grades K-6. Now students go to Metcalfe County Elementary. One of the foremost doctors in south-central Kentucky and the state during the twentieth century was Dr. C.C. Howard, who was born in Summer Shade.
