Messatida
Messatida ( el, Μεσσάτιδα) is a former municipality in Achaea, West Greece, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Patras, of which it is a municipal unit. The seat of the municipality was in Ovrya. It is located south of Patras city centre, and stretches from the urbanized plains near the Gulf of Patras to the Omplos hills in the east. The population was 13,852 in 2011. It has an area of 66.366 km². Demenika
Demenika ( el, Δεμένικα) is a village/suburb in the municipality of Patras, Achaea, Greece. It lies south of the city centre, south of the river Glafkos. It is part of the community of Saravali within the municipal unit of Messatida. It is 2 km northeast of Ovrya and 4 km east of Paralia. The population was 2,783 in 2011. The Greek National Road 33 (Patras - Tripoli) passes through the village, and the new Greek National Road 9 (Patras - Pyrgos) passes south of the village. Saravali
Saravali ( el, Σαράβαλι) is a village and a community in the municipal unit of Messatida, Achaea, Greece. The community is located at the southeastern edge of the agglomeration of Patras. The community consists of the villages Saravali, Agios Stefanos, Demenika (the largest village), Kefalovryso and Bakari. Saravali is 6 km south of Patras city centre. Adjacent communities are Petroto to the east, Patras to the north, Ovrya to the west and Krini to the south. The Greek National Road 9 (Patras - Pyrgos) runs through the community. Population History The castle of Saravali was built by the Franks in the 13th century. An important battle of the Greek War of Independence took place at Saravali in 1822 between the Ottomans, who held the fortified city Patras, and the Greek independence fighters led by Theodoros Kolokotronis. Petroto, Achaea
Petroto (Greek: Πετρωτό) is a village and a community in the municipal unit of Messatida, Achaea, Greece. The community consists of the villages Petroto, Mavromandila and Agia Paraskevi. Mavromandila is by far the largest village of the community (pop. 462 in 2001), and is also referred to as ''Petroto''. Mavromandila is located 6 km southeast of Patras city centre, just outside the Patras beltway ( Greek National Road 9). The small mountain villages Petroto and Agia Paraskevi are located resp. 5 and 9 km southeast from Mavromandila, to the east and southeast of Omplos mountain. The renowned Achaia Clauss winery is situated in Mavromandila. Geography The territory of the community Petroto stretches from the coastal plains to the low mountains in the south and east. Kallithea ( el, Καλλιθέα, before 1981: Καλλιθεόκαμπος - ''Kallitheokampos'') is a community in the suburbs of Patras in Achaea, Greece. It is located 9 km south of downtown Patras, on the Greek National Road 33 to Tripoli. Ovrya
Ovrya ( el, Οβρυά) is a town in Achaea, Greece. It is a suburb of Patras, located 6 km south of Patras city centre. It was the seat of the former municipality of Messatida. The Greek National Roads 9 (Patras - Pyrgos) and 33 (Patras - Tripoli) pass through the town. Ovrya is in the transition zone from the densely populated coastal area to the hills in the southeast, including Omplos. Agriculture (olive groves, pastures) is still the dominant land use in the areas south and east of Ovrya. Mesatis
Mesatis ( grc, Μεσάτις) was a town of ancient Achaea, in the neighbourhood of Patrae. It is said to have been founded by the Ionians, when they occupied the country. After their expulsion,, the Achaean hero Patreus withdrew the inhabitants from Antheia and Mesatis to Aroë, which he enlarged and called Patrae after himself. The city's acropolis probably continued to be called Aroë, which was often synonymous with Patrae. Omplos
Omplos ( el, Ομπλός) is a mountain in Achaea, Greece. It rises steeply from the coastal plains around Patras to 926 m elevation. It is separated from the higher mountain Panachaikos by the valley of the river Glafkos. The summit is 2 km west of the village Petroto, 4 km east of Kallithea, 4 km southeast of Saravali and 10 km southeast of Patras city centre. Paralia ( gr, Παραλία, ''Paralía'', meaning "beach") is a town and a former municipality in Achaea, West Greece, Greece. Vrachnaiika ( el, Βραχνέικα or Βραχναίικα, ) is a town and a former municipality in Achaea, West Greece, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Patras, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 32.111 km2. It is suburb of a Patras, about 11 km southwest of the city centre, on the Gulf of Patras coast. The population of the town is around 2,700 and of the municipal unit around 4,600. The community has a disused rail station on the line from Patras to Pyrgos. The Greek National Road 9 (Patras - Pyrgos) passes south of the centre.
