Gertrude Webster Kamkwatira
Gertrude Webster Kamkwatira (c. 1966 – 2006) was a Malawian playwright, director and actress. Life Kamkwatira was born in about 1966. She became director of the Wakhumbata Ensemble Theatre in 1999 after the death of its founder, Du Chisiza. Later she "defected" from that group and formed the theatre group ''Wanna-Do''. Positions she held included President of the National Theatre Association of Malawi and Chairperson of the Copyright Society of Malawi. Kamkwatira wrote about thirteen plays in English, including ''It's My Fault'', which deals with domestic violence and sexual oppression, ''Jesus' Retrial'' and ''Breaking the News'', a play about contending with AIDS. In an interview in 2003, she said that she would normally spend one or two days writing a play, then continue working on it for a further three weeks. Sam Mpasu
Sam Mpasu (17 September 1945 – 15 February 2018) was a Malawian politician, author, and former diplomat. He served as Minister of Commerce, Secretary General of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in 1999, and speaker of the Malawi National Assembly. Early life Mpasu was a student at Dedza secondary school and went to University of Malawi's Chancellor College. Career Mpasu served as a diplomat in the foreign service for the Malawi mission to Germany. While in Germany he wrote a book in 1975 entitled ''Nobody's Friend'', which got him arrested because the Kamuzu Banda regime thought that it was written about Kamuzu Banda. Mpasu was detained without trial for "two years, one month, one week, and one day" in Mikuyu Prison from 1975 to 1977. From 1978 Mpasu worked at Lever Bros (now Unilever) in various capacities until 1988 when he was seconded to run the Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI). Francis Moto
Professor Francis P. B. Moto (born 1952) is a Malawian writer, academic, and diplomat. His home is Golomoti in the Dedza District of Malawi. He attended secondary school in Chichiri in Blantyre and was admitted to the University of Malawi in 1972, obtaining a degree in linguistics in 1977.''Nzeru Umati Zako Nzokuuza'', author information. Felix Mnthali
Felix Mnthali (born 1933 in Southern Rhodesia) is a Malawian poet, novelist and playwright. Educated at what is now the National University of Lesotho, Mnthali's works include a book of poetry, '' When Sunset Comes to Sapitwa'' (1980), and a novel, '' My Dear Anniversary'' (1992). He was also included in the 1984 ''Penguin Book of Modern African Poetry''. His poem "The Stranglehold of English Lit." implicates the English literary tradition, and especially Jane Austen, in the slave trade and colonial imperialism. Emily Mkamanga
Emily Lilly Mkamanga (27 December 1949 – 28 November 2021) was a Malawian writer and social commentator. She was one of the few well-known female writers in Malawi. Early life Emily Lilly Mkamanga was born in Chilumba, Nyasaland, on 27 December 1949. She was educated at Livingstonia, Uliwa, Lilongwe Girls' Secondary School and the University of Malawi, where she studied in the Bunda College of Agriculture and graduated in 1971. Career After working at Chitedze Agricultural Research Station, she spent fifteen years as an Agricultural Information Officer at the National Bank. While still there, in 1990 she published ''The Night Stop'', a novel about "the long-suffering wife of a promiscuous lawyer". Mkamanga's retirement from the bank in 1993 coincided with the end of Dr. Hastings Banda's 30 years in power. Benedicto Wokomaatani Malunga (born in 1962), also known as Ben Malunga, is a Malawian poet, writing in the Chichewa language. He is also a short-story writer, an essayist, a music composer, public speaker, and translator who has translated Chinua Achebe's ''Things Fall Apart'' into Chichewa under the title ''Chipasupasu''. Malunga holds a bachelor's degree from Chancellor College of the University of Malawi (1986) and an MA from Manchester University (1996) in the UK. He is currently working as Registrar for the University of Malawi and Secretary of the University of Malawi Council. Qabaniso Malewezi
Qabaniso Malewezi, also known as Q, (born 1979) is a Malawian musician and poet. A former producer for the hip-hop band Real Elements, he has since authored several collections of poems including the audio collection ''People''. In 2015 he received an honorary doctorate from Mzuzu University. Biography The son of Justin Malewezi, a former vice-president of Malawi, Malewezi grew up in Lilongwe. He developed a love for music at a young age, learned to play the guitar, and spent his teenage years performing and recording music. As an adult, he moved to the United Kingdom, where he studied performing arts at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford, Surrey. Ken Diston Lipenga (born 14 February 1952) is a Malawian politician, journalist, and writer. He was the Member of Parliament for Phalombe East from 1997 to 2014. He has served in various ministerial positions. Personal life Ken Diston Lipenga was born on 14 February 1952 at Chiringa, Phalombe District.
