Lääne-Viru County
Lääne-Viru County ( et, Lääne-Viru maakond or ''Lääne-Virumaa'') is one of 15 counties of Estonia. It is in northern Estonia, on the south coast of the Gulf of Finland. In Estonian, ''lääne'' means western and ''ida'' means east or eastern. Lääne-Viru borders Ida-Viru County to the east, Jõgeva County to the south, and Järva and Harju counties to the west. In January 2013, Lääne-Viru County had a population of 58,806: 4.5% of the population in Estonia. History In prehistoric times, Lääne-Virumaa was settled by Estonians of the Vironian tribe. County Government The County Government ( et, maavalitsus) is led by a governor ( et, maavanem), who is appointed by the Government of Estonia. Counties Of Estonia
Counties ( et, maakond, plural ') are the first-level administrative subdivisions of Estonia. Estonian territory is composed of 15 counties, including 13 on the mainland and 2 on islands. The government (') of each county is led by a ' (governor) who represents the national government (') at the regional level. Governors are appointed by the national government for a term of five years. Each county is further divided into municipalities of two types: urban municipalities (towns, ') and rural municipalities (parishes, '). The number and name of the counties were not affected. Malla, Estonia
Malla is a village in Viru-Nigula Parish, Lääne-Viru County, in northeastern Estonia. It is located about 3 km east of the town of Kunda, Estonia, Kunda. On 1 January 2011 Malla had a population of 82. Malla manor Malla manor traces its history back to 1443, when it is first recorded in written sources. During that time, there was a small castle at the site. Around 1620, the estate became the property of Swedish field marshal Gustav Horn, Count of Pori, Gustav Horn. In 1651–1654, he commissioned architect Zakarias Hoffmann to erect a new manor house on the site. The house burnt down during the Great Northern War, and the current building received its appearance in the 1880s. Mõdriku
Mõdriku is a village in Vinni Parish, Lääne-Viru County, in northeastern Estonia. Mõdriku Manor Mõdriku Manor (german: Mödders) was first mentioned in 1470. Over the centuries, it has been the property of various Baltic German families. During the 20th century, it has been used by various schools. The building traces its oldest parts to the 17th century, but has been extensively enlarged and rebuilt both during the 1780s and 1890s. Palmse
Palmse is a village in Haljala Parish, Lääne-Viru County, in northern Estonia, on the territory of Lahemaa National Park. Palmse manor Palmse estate (german: Palms) belonged to the convent of St. Michael in Tallinn in the Middle Ages and is referred to as a manorial estate in 1510. From 1676 until the Estonian declaration of independence in 1919 it belonged to the Baltic German von der Pahlen family. Construction of the present building started under the ownership of Gustav Christian von der Pahlen in 1697, by designs of architect Jacob Staël von Holstein. The house was burnt during the Great Northern War and restored in 1730 by Arend Dietrich von der Pahlen, who had studied architecture in the Netherlands. The house was given its present-day look during a renovation in 1782-1785, under the guidance of architect Johann Caspar Mohr, who designed a number of manor houses in Estonia as well as the present-day seat of Government of Estonia, the Stenbock House in Tallinn. Porkuni
Porkuni (german: Borckholm) is a village in Tapa Parish, Lääne-Viru County, in northern Estonia. The settlement is located around the Lake Porkuni, which is the source of the Valgejõgi River. In 1944, the Battle of Porkuni was fought in the area. Porkuni castle In 1479, a castle was built on an island in the lake by the bishop of Tallinn Simon von der Borch. Porkuni castle (german: Schloss Borkholm) was a four-sided structure surrounding a central courtyard, where a small church stood. In each corner of the castle stood a cannon-tower, and there was also a gate tower which is still preserved, albeit with a few later alterations. Judging from the remains, the castle was built in different stages and the walls were gradually made higher. The castle was destroyed during the Livonian War. Kadrina Parish
Kadrina Parish ( et, Kadrina vald) is a rural municipality in Lääne-Viru County, northern Estonia. It covers an area of 329.26 km² (10% of the total area of the county) and has a population of 5,156 (as of January 1, 2004). The parish has had its current borders since 2005, when Saksi Parish was dissolved and Kiku, Pariisi and Salda villages were merged to Kadrina Parish, the larger part of Saksi Parish was added to Tapa Parish. The administrative centre is the small borough (''alevik'') of Kadrina, which has a population of 2,600. Other major populated places are the small borough of Hulja (600 inhabitants) and the villages of Kihlevere (200 inhabitants), Vohnja (200 inhabitants) and Viitna (100 inhabitants). There are 32 villages in total. The northern border of the municipality is also the southern border of Lahemaa National Park.
