''Lyperanthus serratus'', commonly called rattle beaks, is a species of orchid which is endemic to the south-west of Western Australia. It derives its common name from the fact that the flowers rattle if gently shaken. Description ''Lyperanthus serratus'' is a tuberous, perennial herb, high with 3 to 10 green, yellow and brown flowers, wide, from September to October. The flowers have white (non-secreting) glandular hairs on the labellum. There is a single leaf which is arched, ribbed, leathery and linear, about long and wide. A powdery bloom covers the entire plant, except for the innermost parts of the flower. The single leaf is lance-shaped, long and wide, dark green with a paler lower surface. John Lindley FRS (5 February 1799 – 1 November 1865) was an English botanist, gardener and orchidologist. Early years Born in Catton, near Norwich, England, John Lindley was one of four children of George and Mary Lindley. George Lindley was a nurseryman and pomologist and ran a commercial nursery garden. Although he had great horticultural knowledge, the undertaking was not profitable and George lived in a state of indebtedness. As a boy he would assist in the garden and also collected wild flowers he found growing in the Norfolk countryside. Lindley was educated at Norwich School.
